Obituary of Richard "Brother" James Young, Glace Bay

Richard "Brother" James Young, age 74, passed away at Taigh Na Mara in Glace Bay on October 30, 2023.

 

Born and raised in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Richard and Hannah (McDonald) Young.

 

Richard worked his entire life at the Sydney Steel Plant, even coming out of retirement for a few years to spend more time working before finally retiring for good. Richard was a devoted father and uncle who never missed a dance recital, band concert or school awards ceremony.

 

Richard spent many years volunteering with St. Anne's Church, helping with collection and communion offering. He was also previously a member of St. Anne's cemetery committee. 

 

Richard loved camping and going for drives. Many vacations were spent at Lake O Law in Margaree, or travelling through Maine and New Hampshire. Sundays were usually spent driving the Cabot Trail or visiting family in St. Peter's and L'Ardoise. 

 

Richard is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Young, and special niece Erica (Art) Surette, who he cared for as his own daughter, and who was his support person as he took ill.

 

He is also survived by sisters Carol Anne (Ray) Whitmore, Brampton, and Rita (Joe) Kubat, Mississauga, brother Tommy Young, Glace Bay, aunt Annie Smith, Glace Bay, who over the past couple of years that Richard was sick, was always there for a hospital visit or to bring him a homemade meal, as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Patsy West, brother, Michael Young and a niece, Tonya Young. 

 

No visitation per Richard's request, cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.

 

The funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Anne's Church on Saturday, November 4 at 11 am, followed by burial in St. Anne's cemetery. Fr. Macleen Anyanwu presiding.
