Obituary of Rebecca "Becky" O'Neil, Glace Bay

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Becky O’Neil of Glace Bay, on November 30th, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

She was born in Glace Bay on January 27th, 1944. Becky grew up on 4th St., in New Aberdeen, and moved to the Sterling after getting married.

Becky attended St. John School, and later graduated from St. Michael High School. She always had a passion for bookkeeping and numbers. This passion led her to being a long-time employee and manager of Coady Credit Union. She was a devoted member of the St. Leo's Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Catholic Women's League at St. Anne’s Parish.

Becky spent her life committed to helping and caring for people in the community. She was a loving wife and devoted mother, who set high expectations and spent countless hours doing her best to ensure that those expectations were met. She was a loving grandmother, who went out of her way to support the needs and activities of her grandchildren.

Becky is predeceased by her husband, Reggie, and her parents, Tony and Rodina (Campbell) MacFarlane.

She is survived by her son Jamie (Kristy) and grandchildren, Grace and Grant of Ottawa, Ontario, her brother, Joe MacFarlane (Margie) of Glace Bay, sisters in-law, Carmie French and Grace Walsh, of Glace Bay, along with her many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank New Waterford Home Care for the excellent care they have provided over the last 17 years. We would also like to thank the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for supporting her during her final months.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.

The funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay at 10 AM on Monday, December 4th, followed by a reception, then interment in the parish cemetery. Fr. Macleen Anyanwu presiding.

Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
