Obituary of Marie "Sister" Marsh, R.N., Reserve Mines

With broken hearts, we say goodbye to a kind and loving person. Our sister and aunt, Marie Marsh, age 94 of Reserve Mines, passed away on Sunday, December 31st, 2023 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney.

Born Margaret Ellen Marie in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Jane (Kanary) Marsh.

“Sister” as she was called, graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1956. She worked at New Waterford Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay. She treated her patients with care and kindness and continued this practice throughout her life, offering assistance to other residents at Harbourstone when she could.

Sister loved to travel from an early age, making trips to Austria, Rome and many parts of the US and Canada. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines for most of her life and then later on became a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.

Sister is survived by her brother, Fr. Anthony (Toronto), sister in law, Irma (Coady) Marsh as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph Leo, James, Alphonse, Dennis, Sylvester, Henry, Stewart, Coady, Gannon (Br. Ninian), Joseph Eric, sisters, Mary Ann, Dolores, Dophie, Gilbert, Maurina and Zita.

The family is thankful to the staff at Spanish Bay, then Mira Bay at Harbourstone for their kindness and attention, also a special thank you to all those who visited Sister over the years. Your visits were truly enjoyed.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 6th, 2024 at 10 am in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Interment at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Reserve Mines.

Memorial donations in memory of Marie may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
