Sincere condolences at the great loss of Bernie. Mixed with your grief let there be an appreciation for his relief from suffering, and an appreciation for the legacy of love that he leaves you all. More than just a family man, he was a community spirit, helping many and bringing a smile to all.
Personally, I remember when Bernie was so helpful to Jim when he was having difficulty at the trailer. I am sure that there are many people who have good memories of his kindhearted generosity.

Dear Leone, Family, extended Family, and Friends,
I wish to offer you my sincerest condolences and sympathy on Bernie’s passing. He was truly a gentleman and will be missed by all who knew him. I am out of the country and sadly was not able to attend the visitation and celebration of life today. He sure was an asset to B.E.C., the N.W.C.H., and the town of New Waterford. May God bless you all as you journey the difficult days ahead. Liam, Max, and Lewis were former students and I enjoyed them and their fine New Waterford roots. Take good care of each other!

I was a young teacher and he was a real role model, a great mentor for me with his friendly style and professional manner. Dear Leone, members of your family and the community of New Waterford,
No one knows better than you his family the service Bernie gave in his job and his community. When I was working at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital Bernie was working hard as part of The Foundation for the Hospital to raise money so we could improve things. Working there I was very aware and appreciated the efforts that were made so we could continue to provide good care and have the tools we needed. That support meant the world to those of us who were lucky enough to work there supported by the efforts of Bernie and others like him. This helped to create a special community spirit within the hospital. As I pray for you during this time I do so with sadness for you, and with a grateful heart for the dedication of such a good man.

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn the passing of a true gentleman, Bernie.
He was a community-minded, generous, kind, and gentle soul.
I remember fondly, "hanging out" at your home many, many years ago. Shauna and I were young teenagers.
Sometimes there would be 10 girls or more in the house! Wow! Bernie certainly had infinite patience for us. He was always quick with a few jokes, and wit, amidst his welcoming smile.
It was a pleasure to happen upon Bernie and Leone at various basketball courts here in Halifax over the years. My parents enjoyed those occasions as well.
May the support and love of those around you bring comfort and peace to sustain you through the days ahead.

Bernie MacDonald was a professional who gave great guidance to many in his chosen career.I graduated in 1975 but he went right on helping me with post secondary education paperwork right up to 1982 when I started nursing school at St. Rita’s.I was grateful for his help and never forgot his kind words of helpful encouragement!
