Obituary of Anna Mae Gillis, RN, New Waterford
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Mae Gillis, RN, age 96 of New Waterford on February 6, 2024, at the Maple Hill Manor with her daughter Marian at her side.
Anna Mae was born in New Waterford September 19, 1927, to the late Neil and Margaret (Gillis) MacKinnon. She graduated in 1948 from the New Waterford General Hospital and after receiving her R.N. she worked for several years in Boston as an O.R. nurse before returning to Cape Breton.
Besides her parents, Anna Mae was predeceased by her husband, Angus, and her siblings Cassie, Marie, Dannie, and John “Red”.
Anna Mae is survived by her children, Dannie (Arlene), Lawrence (Nora), Marian, Kelly, and David. Also surviving are her grandchildren, David (Sharon Ann), Melissa (Glen), Kurtis (Anastasia), Krista (Derek) and by her great-grandchildren, Luke, Stella, Scarlett, Riley, Alistair, Kailyn, and Alyssa.
For those who knew and loved her, she will be missed for her gift of storytelling, love of Scottish and Irish music, and remembered for her famous “slippery biscuits”.
Thank you to the staff of Maple Hill Manor who took great care of her during her stay.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A Funeral Mass of celebration will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Godwin Obike officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a reception to follow in the funeral home.
