Obituary of Willena Cecilia MacQuarrie, New Waterford
The family of Willena Cecilia MacQuarrie are sad to announce her passing on February 5th, 2024.
Willena had an early claim to fame being the first baby born in New Waterford in 1946. She was a daughter of Edward and Mae (MacKinnon) MacQuarrie. Willena remained in New Waterford through her youth and spent most of her adult life in Montreal with her sisters, Kaye and Sadie. Willena also lived in both Boston and Halifax. Willena moved back to New Waterford in 2009 with her sisters.
Willena was a Montreal sports fan, cheering for the Canadiens and her beloved Expos. She became a Blue Jays fan after the Expos team left Montreal. In her younger years, she played basketball and softball.
She is survived by her sisters, Margaret (Jim) Carver, MA, Kaye and Sadie, New Waterford; sister-in-law, Carole, Mississauga; and brother, Tom (Yvonne), Winnipeg. Willena is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including her Godsons, John Brown and Stephen MacQuarrie. Willena was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Mary, John, Greg, Don, Eddie, Anna and Bernice.
Kaye and Sadie would like to extend special thanks to Glenn MacLean, Debbie LeBel and Carmel Campbell for their support during Willena’s later years.
Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A joint visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025 from noon until the time of the service at 1 p.m. for both Willena and her sister, Kaye MacQuarrie all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Father Jim Oliver officiating. A reception will be held in the funeral home with burial to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, New Waterford. Donations in her memory may be made to Alzheimer Society Nova Scotia.
