Obituary of Walter Hilroy Clements, Port Caledonia

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, and uncle, Walter Clements, age 90 on Saturday, February 24th,2024.

Walter left us after a brief illness.  He passed away at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital in New Waterford.

Walter was the son of the late Fred and Iris (Nearing) Clements of Port Morien.

Left to mourn his passing is his loving wife, Joan (Marshall) Clements, Saint John; daughter, Fran (Anita), Iona; son, Gerry (Alena), Sydney; and daughter Mary (Dwayne), Medicine Hat, AB. 

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Warren, Nicole, Brittany, Logan, Riley, Kelsey, Kadence and 5 great grandchildren, soon to be six, sisters, Frances, Betty, Elaine, Karen (Lloyd), Julie, Linda, Kay (Michael); sister-in law, Judy Clements, many nieces and nephews whom he loved and was loved by.

Walter was an Iron Worker by trade.  He spent a majority of his life in construction working closely with his brothers and building relationships in and out of the industry.  He was involved with many construction projects locally including the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, expansion of the Cape Breton University and years at the Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay. Walter loved to dance.  Many a Saturday nights were spent at Branch 3 Legion dancing with the love of his life Joan.  They would start their Saturday afternoons listening to the classics on 8-track stereo and dancing around the house like they were 20.

Many remember him for the store on Dearn’s Corner going to Big Glace Bay Beach.  He and Joan opened Joan’s Dairy in 1976.  They retired from the store many years later and enjoyed their home on the Donkin Hwy overlooking the ocean.  Walter enjoyed gardening in his retirement producing an amazing garden every year up until he was eighty-eight.

Besides his parents, Walter was pre-deceased by his brothers, Charles (Buddy), Freddy, Wayne, Eldon, and sisters Joan, Yvonne.

Cremation has taken place.  A funeral mass will be held in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Port Morien at a later date with the time to be announced.  Interment in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Blackbrook.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care or a charity of your choice.
