Obituary of John Gerard McIvor, Glace Bay

It is with sadness that the family of John McIvor announce his passing on Monday, March 18, 2024.

He will be sadly missed by his sons, Robert and Colin, his partner, caregiver and the mother of his children, Wendy.

John is also survived by grandchildren, Taylor and Hunter. Also left to mourn is his only surviving sibling, Cathy (Jimmy) Hill, and sister-in-law, Michelle McIvor and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the youngest son of the late Fred and Marie (Dezagiacomo) McIvor.

John was predeceased by siblings, Irene, Polly (Charlie) Nearing, Theresa, and Fred.

In his younger years, John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He passed these traits on to his sons and many hours were spent trudging through the woods. Even if they came home emptyhanded, they had many stories to tell.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay, where a visitation will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 1:00 until 3:00 pm.

We, the family would like to thank, John’s family doctor, Dr. Stephanie Ofoegbu, Dr. Yeung and the staff of the Renal Dialysis Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the excellent care John received and the palliative care doctors and nurses, who were there for us 24 hours a day. 

To Dr. Peter who helped retain John’s eye sight to the end. Thank you to the VON, Homecare, and our wonderful next-door neighbor, Denise Gillis who went above and beyond with all of her help.

Memorial donations can be made to the dialysis unit or the patient care fund, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
