Obituary of Raymond Patrick Oliver, New Waterford

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Raymond P. Oliver, announce his death on June 6, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Born in New Waterford on September 14, 1957, he was the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Gale) Oliver. Ray started his career in Sydney working for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation as an inspector before he fulfilled his lifelong ambition of serving in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Ray joined the RCMP in 1980, retiring with the rank of superintendent in 2016. As a Mountie, Ray served in Labrador City, Grand Falls, Piccadilly, and Gander NL, Ottawa, and Halifax.

He is survived by his wife Gertrude (MacSween), sons Greg (Renee), Chris (Alyssa), his daughter Aimee (Alexi), and his grandchildren Anabelle and Beckham. He was predeceased by his son Scott (Elaine) and his sister Diane (Frank) Bates. Also surviving are Ray’s sisters Rita (Rick) Hanes, Gail Power, Cathy (Dale) Caume and his brothers Rev. James, Gordon (Marlene), and Charles (Cheryl).

A list of Ray’s professional accomplishments stretched from the walls of depot in Saskatchewan where he trained, to the edges of Newfoundland he served but his impact far surpasses those bounds. It has been said that a man is not measured by his accomplishments but by the quality of his character. In this regard, Raymond served in a class of his own with an unwavering commitment to his family and friends; he lived a life marked by honesty and integrity that all those who follow him will strive to match. He is dearly loved by his family and his loss is profoundly felt.

A Celebration of Life was held in Halifax, NS. Condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
