Obituary of Francis Joseph Currie: New Waterford,Nine Mile River
It is with shattered hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our father and brother, Francis Joseph Currie, at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton on Saturday October 5, 2024 with his sister by his side.
Francis was born on April 13, 1961 to the late Neil and Theresa (Hines) Currie into a small close-knit loving family.
After receiving his Diploma in Mechanical Technology from the College of Cape Breton, Francis worked for Magna, Pratt and Whitney Canada (26 years) and most recently Bravo Targett Safety, Alberta. While Francis had not lived in New Waterford for the last 30 years, he recently started the process to return to New Waterford; the place he always called home.
Left to mourn are his children, Virginia and Neil Currie, both of Halifax who he was always so proud to call them his children. Also surviving is his sister, Neila (Leo Peeples) of New Waterford; aunts, Betty Currie and Margie Treige along with many cousins. He also leaves behind his over half a century friends Lorne, Gordie, Cyril, Dave, Stephen and Greg. As Curds would have called them Gus, Twig, Cy, Mellow and Barbs. We know he is now laughing again with Blair Boudreau. In addition to his lifelong friends, he will also be missed by his twenty-five-year friend, Alan O’Leary, who together volunteered on the Nine Mile River Fire Department.
While his stay at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton did not end as we had hoped, we are so grateful that Virginia, Neil and Neila got to spend time with Francis laughing and sharing stories. We are forever grateful for these memories.
As requested by Francis, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Funeral Mass will be held at the Parish of Saint Leonard on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a reception to follow at the funeral home. Family flowers only please. Donations in Francis’s memory can be made to the Nova Scotia SPCA-Cape Breton Shelter. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Special thank you to Basil, Basil Robert and Kenny for easing our burden during this difficult time.
