Kathy, Gerard, Alanna, Blair, Bernie, Stacey and families,
My deepest and most sincere condolences on Charlie’s passing. I was very fortunate to have spent many Saturday evenings working those glory years of hockey at the NW Arena when that was the place to be. Charlie was a force to be reckoned with and sometimes I would joke with him that if he didn’t slow down and leave the hat on his head he was going to create another bald spot! Hockey was great in those days - the arena was full, the fans were engaged and happy. Charlie was proud of what he had accomplished and rightfully so. I also worked in the Sydney Shopping Centre building with him and would often scoot over and heckle him about his Yankees - of course every Red Sox fan must seek out a Yankee fan. When the Alpines moved the Pier Rink, Charlie asked me to work the gate for him and I graciously accepted and he even persuaded me into calling bingo - you see Charlie had a way with words. He had you saying yes before you knew what you were committing yourself to!
For now, his battle is over and he has joined his beloved Mimi - rest easy Charlie. I hope our teams are playing up there and it’s a rematch of the 2004 World Series ❤️

Bernie, Kathy and Alana please accept heart felt condolences from your cousins Phonse and Barbara Jessome in Halifax.
Charlie was a champion of Hockey and minor sports in Sydney and will be remembered for that by hundreds. But, there is a side of your dad you didn’t know about. He was a great, reliable and long time source of news for ATV. I learned early in my career about the value of Charlie and his job. On a slow day I’d head to the Sydney shopping centre, pick up a Tim Hortons coffee and go visit Charlie’s barber shop and sports memorabilia museum. He’d always plead with me to do a story about a young player of team he was involved with. And, I often did sports features based on Charlie’s information. While Charlie loved hockey, he was also passionate about politics and we both knew that was the real reason behind my visits. Charlie knew everything about who was up to what at Sydney city hall and the many town halls around industrial Cape Breton and that knowledge extended to Province House in Halifax. It wouldn’t take long, maybe half a coffee, during one of our sessions when he’d put his hand on my shoulder and guide me away from the wide open doorway of the shop. “Come here Duke” he’d say and guide me in. He’d fill me in on the details of a great story. I would verify the facts, using sources far from Charlie, and have a great story. I remember confronting Premier John Buchanan outside the General Mining building in Glace Bay and nailing him with a series of detailed questions about the used electric arc furnace he was negotiating with China for. It was the heart of his
Modernization plans for Sysco. Unfortunately the mill could be taken apart, put into containers and shipped around the world to be re-assembled in Sydney. Trouble was, this meant in the future it could be pulled apart, boxed up and sold to some foreign buyer somewhere else in the world. The steel union was furious. So was Buchanan. This had been kept under tight wraps until the government was ready to announce it in its own way. He demanded to know my sources. Of course I never handed them over. I think that was the biggest story Charlie slipped me. And like all the others he’d just nod and smile the next time he saw me at the mall. Charlie taught me a lessons I carried with me throughout Nova Scotia, across Canada and around the world. When I was working on a story in unfamiliar territory I’d seek out the most successful barber shop and settle in for a trim and a chat. More often that not I left the shop with
More information than I had going in. At least I had leads to follow.
I’ll miss Charlie, as I’ve missed him since I left Sydney. We always kept our little secret private but he wouldn’t mind me giving him credit now.
I’m glad though. He’ll be able to resume his weekly chats with his sister, my mom. We knew never to try her phone during Charlie’s time. She cherished those calls so much.
Barb and I send you all our love and to your dad, safe journey uncle Charlie.

So sorry for your loss. Uncle Charlie was an amazing man I remember skipping school only once in my life and went to the mall in Sydney . I got caught and was terrified my uncle Charlie saw me when the police came to clear out the mall. He sensed I was terrified and said I was there for the day with him because I wasn’t feeling good when they left he told me he would keep my secret if I promised never to skip School ever again ! I promised him and always kept that promise and stayed in school as a teacher and the principal all because of my uncle Charlie! Thank you uncle Charlie life is short and the memory I have of you that day I will never forget and will remain treasured forever!
Love Jeannie and Joe Stone

Lana, Kathy, Bernie and families;
Remembering Charlie at many pool parties and family gatherings, especially Boxing Day. He and Mimi certainly enjoyed and Loved family gatherings. They always made everyone feel welcomed as their doors were always open to family and friends. Charlie certainly enjoyed his sports especially Hockey. He gave back to communities by supporting a number of teams and was always first in line to help fundraise or provide whatever assistance he could.
He really was a legend and will always be remembered by friends and families who knew him.
May you rest in peace Charlie with Mimi, your wife, lifetime friend and forever Love.
