Obituary of Alexandra (Sandy) Macdonald Lyonnais

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mrs. Alexandra “Sandy” (Macdonald) Lyonnais of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, on January 16, 2025, at the age of 78.

Born on December 3, 1947, in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Sandy was the beloved daughter of the late Elizabeth Grant and Alex Macdonald.

Sandy leaves behind her devoted husband, Dennis Lyonnais, and her cherished children, Richard (Claudia Lupin) and Nancy (Alexandre Paul). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Laura, Christopher, Wylliam, and Jennyfer.

She is also survived by her sisters Sadie Warburton (Gordie), Cathy McPherson (Gussie), Theresa Donovan (Pat), Sheila Oliver (Gary), and Maureen Wilson (Sandy), as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family. She was predeceased by her sister Betty Poirier (Marshall), who held a special place in her heart.

After graduating from High School, Sandy attended the Sydney Campus of StFX (Office Administration). While studying, she wrote an award winning essay, resulting in a prize trip to Expo 67. When she was 20, she moved to Dartmouth and became a computer technician for Nova Scotia Power. During that time, she met the love of her life Denis and had her son Richard. It was after this they decided to move to Montreal where they had their daughter Nancy and resided there until Sandy’s passing.

Sandy had a deep love for her Cape Breton roots and cherished every visit back to New Waterford, where she could spend time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed singing with her harmonious voice, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and joy. Though she lived away for many years, Sandy remained closely connected to her family and friends, treasuring the bonds that distance could not diminish. Her sense of humor and warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

The family will welcome relatives and friends at Salon Funéraire Jacques & Fils, 75 Rue Elizabeth, Sorel-Tracy, QC J3P 4G6, on Friday, January 24, 2025, beginning at 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service to follow at 9:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Pierre of Sorel Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Sandy’s memory.

May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by love and the laughter she so deeply cherished.
