Obituary of John 'Butch' McGillivray
It is with great sadness and love that we, the family, announce the passing of John "Butch" McGillivray, 71, on February 15th, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Butch was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was born on July 21st, 1945 in New Waterford to the late Angus and Margaret (Gratton) McGillivray. Butch was predeceased by his wife and friend Arthina (Slade) McGillivray. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Tony) Leudy; brother, Charles (Helen); sister Selma (Bill) MacGuire; grandchildren Brittany (Tim) MacLeod, Tanner and Lakyn; two great-grandchildren, Posey and Aker; nephews, Scott McGillivray, Larry, Gus, and Sean McGuire; and niece, Erin Billings.
Butch was a hard working master mechanic for most of his life. He instinctively knew when we needed him; supporting us in all aspects of our lives, expecting nothing in return. He was a quiet and gentle soul who loved his family deeply. He will be forever missed.
Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. A luncheon will follow in St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. Donations in his memory may be made to the Intensive Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
