Obituary of Emile Gerald Landru, Glace Bay
Emile Gerald Landru
Glace Bay
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great grandfather. Dad passed away peacefully at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay on Monday, March 20, 2017 at the age of 90.
Born in Glace Bay, August 20, 1926 he was the son of the late Augustus Emile and Jean (Vercammen) Landru.
Dad was a man of few words but made a lasting impression. He was self-employed and built his business, Landru’s Construction based on his remarkable work ethic. Dad built a house for him and mom in 1983 and a house for his daughter in 1987.After he retired, Dad enjoyed gardening and blue berry picking so mom could make her pies and jams for him. Dad was a member of the Glace Bay Lions Club for a number of years.
He enjoyed watching many sports but was a ”die hard” Habs and Blue Jays fan. Dad and Mom enjoyed many years travelling together with Nova Bus Tours, where they were affectionately referred to as “El and Em”. They also enjoyed going to Black Point Beach staying at the D and B Campground with their son and family.
Dad and Mom were together for 64 years and with her passing Dad found it difficult to mend a broken heart. Dad was his daughter’s superman and he passed on his work ethic to his son. Emile had a special relationship with his son-in-law, John, whom he considered a son. He loved his daughter in -law Louise who he referred to as a good woman. He enjoyed family gatherings, especially when a meal was prepared. He was affectionately referred to as “Poppey” by many friends and their children.
Poppey was an awesome grandfather as this is where he found and gave a lot of joy to his grandchildren. The grandchildren Bryan, Joanna, Ian, Devon and Paige consider themselves fortunate and grateful for the fond memories they made and the legacy of stories they have. He also had a fondness for the fur babies in the family; Shadow, Anthony, Odin and Nawla. When Dad was on his own for the last two years he was so appreciative when Linda and Deborah would come to visit and bring a home cooked meal.
Left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Pauline (John) McIsaac, Glace Bay and son, Gerald (Louise) Landru, Stellarton.
Emile will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Bryan, Joanna, Ian (Devon); great grandchild, Ella Paige; step grandchildren, Donna (Mike), Anne (Spyro); step great-grandchildren, Steven, Mikaela and Christopher. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Toomey, Glace Bay and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years Ella (Kelloway); brothers; Frank, Edgar and Charles .
In honoring Dad’s wishes there will be no public visitation or funeral service.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St. Glace Bay. A private family committal will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations in Dad’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. At this time, we would like to give special thanks to the staff at Victoria Haven for their wonderful care and compassion given to dad.
