Mrs MacNeil was a friend and teacher with Mom - Avice Matheson. She was a dear friend of our family and our greater New Waterford family. We applaud her dedication and years of service in the NSTU. God Bless. We are who we are today from the teachings and passion shown by Mrs MacNeil and the many others.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I first knew Mrs. MacNeil as the mother of a friend and classmate and, for a time, I was also fortunate to get to know Leona through her friendship with my own Mom and our shared love for swimming. Her beautiful smile and generous spirit will be remembered.

Our sincere condolences to all those touched by the passing of Leona, especially Patricia, Anthony, Maureen, Rosita and their families. Aunt Leona was always kind to my brother and me, and I remember her as someone full of energy who always had a good story and, most of all, baked goods containing seasonal berries. She was certainly renowned in our family as the best berry-picker in Cape Breton. Patrick, Martine, Stephanie and Keith.

We were fortunate to have Leona as our summer neighbour in Main-a-Dieu from the time we moved to the village in 1999. She was unfailingly friendly and generous (and amusing!), and we learned an immense amount about the history of the village, and of course Scatarie Island, from her. Her love of the place, both its natural beauty and human heritage, was profoundly moving, and made us realize how extraordinarily lucky we both are to live where we do. On a personal note, I was also grateful for her interest in and encouragement of my poetry, and her respect for language and literature as one of the pleasures of a rich and full life - which she certainly lived.
Our sincere sympathy to all the family,
Sean & Lee-Anne

Patrica, Anthony, Maureen, and Rosita. May God comfort you in this time of sorrow. Your mother enjoyed a long life with you, her children, and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. While the last few months of her life were extremely difficult for all of you, your mother is now free of her sickness and enjoying eternal happiness in heaven with the rest of her sisters and Grandma Rose and Grandpa Tom. When Bernice and I visited Cape Breton we always stopped in for a visit, and a meal, with Leona. She was always a gracious host. Your mother and Bernice had great discussions as to the happenings' in the past year. Again, my sincere sympathy to all of you and my thoughts will be with all of you on Saturday.

My thoughts, prayers and sympathy go out to the family members and close friends!
Through my dearest friend Rosita, I got to know Leona while hanging out at the Arthur Street residence. Leona had a beautiful smile and I loved hear her laughter because it always made me smile.
Leona had a lot of faith so we know she's now in heaven watching over her family.
God bless!

Aunt Leona was a dynamo and definitely a force to be reckoned with. On top of the she was one of the most open armed, warm, caring, loving people I ever knew. She taught me a great many valuable life lessons. Aunt Leona was a treasure. Every single person I've ever met whom she taught, remembered her fondly and with great respect. That is how we will all remember her.

Her life on earth and now the loss of Leona to all who knew and worked with her, those who held her dearest, and those many who loved this lady;are now her last and greatest lesson to all of us. What life lessons she modeled to all who came into the inescapable grasp of her example. St.Francis once said. " Christians should preach the Good News at all times, and sometimes, when really necessary, even use words to do so." Leona lived and radiated the love of God, family, community and the common brotherhood/sisterhood of all people in the way she lived the days of her life. As she believed, I now believe that she has finished the race she was asked to run. She has won the prize. She is at peace in the arms of the Lord she loved. Well done. Leona! We were all blessed to know you. Ray
