Obituary of Patrick John O'Flaherty River Ryan
It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Patrick John O’Flaherty, 83, on August 3, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born in Lingan, he was the son of the late Patrick and Elizabeth (Murphy) O’Flaherty.
During his lifetime he worked as a miner in #16 and #18 collieries and as a welder for Nova Scotia Power and the Heavy Water Plant. Patrick also ran a successful business (ESSO Garage) in River Ryan and was well respected by his customers.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 60 years, Eileen (MacNeil) O’Flaherty; daughters Jean (John) Jobes, New Waterford, Brenda O’Flaherty, Marion Bridge; son, David O’Flaherty at home and special grandson Michael Jobes, New Waterford.
He is also survived by five sisters Mary Gwynne-Harrison, England, Terry (Don) MacNeil, Bernadette (Arnold) Joyner, Joan (Benny) Stephenson and Yvonne Belle all of Ontario and one brother William (Jacqueline) O’Flaherty, River Ryan; sister in-laws, Dolena (Jimmy) MacKinnon, Sadie Leudy, Josephine “Finn” MacNeil all of New Waterford and Louise MacNeil of Sydney; brother in-laws John (Jean) MacNeil and Sonny (Joanne) Boudreau both of Ontario.
Beside his parents he was predeceased by four sisters, Kathleen Hall, Anne Borzush, Eileen Moore, Gwen O’Flaherty; father and mother in-law, Hector and Mary Ann MacNeil; brother in-laws Arnie Leudy, Charles Moore, Francis MacNeil of New Waterford, Michael “Mickey” MacNeil of Sydney, Charles Gwynne-Harrison of England and sister in-law Agnes Boudreau of Ontario.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9pm, in V.J.McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley will be celebrated 10am Wednesday, August 9, in St. Leonard’s Church, Mt. Carmel Ave., New Waterford.
Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Hwy.
Following the interment, all are welcomed to join the family at a reception in the church hall on Convent Street, New Waterford.
Memorial donations in Patrick’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
