Obituary of Wallace 'Wally' Head, New Waterford
It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Allan Wallace 'Wally' Head, 86, of New Waterford on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Eli and Mary Eva (Lush) Head.
Wally worked for ten years in construction prior to working in Nos. 18, 12 and Lingan Collieries. He was employed with Devco for over 34 years. Wally was heavily involved with the Salvation Army. For 20 years he was a Corps Sergeant Major and during a 30 year span, he taught Sunday school at the Salvation Army Citadel in New Waterford. Wally faithfully delivered the Salvation Army War Cry every week for many years. He was a Cub leader for five years and would also travel to Cheticamp, Inverness and other parts of the Highlands collecting for the Salvation Army while testifying for his Lord and Saviour. Wally was a member of the Singers of Faith. This group would travel to senior's complexes and detox centers to sing, testify and pray with the residents and staff. On Sundays, when Pastors were away, Wally would do the preachings and church services.Wally was a born again Christian who lived his faith, loved and read his bible and cherished his family. Even during the final days, he was testifying to his family , expressing his desire for a grand reunion with them in Heaven to rest in the arms of Jesus with him.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Loretta 'Etta' (MacDonald); children, George, Jim (Donna), Mary (Dave) Quigley, Maj. Debbie (Randy) Gatza, Hilda Marie Head (Eric Augusta); brothers, Tom Head, George (Wendy) Head; sisters, Rebecca (Wilson) Hamlyn, Nita Taylor, Maj. Linda Zimmerman; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Wally was predeceased by sisters, Carrie Thorne, Anne Davis, Hilda Gaumont, Pearl Grant, and Dorothy Goulding.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 5-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, New Waterford, with Majors Rocky and Janice Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, with a luncheon to follow at the Salvation Army Citadel.
