To Helen's dear family,
My name is Sarah Cooper. I am a classmate of Helen, from Saint Thomas Social Work, 2006. Helen and I were also roommates for much of the time we were in the program. It's taken me a while to figure out just what I want to say about Helen. She was an incredibly strong, consistent, empathetic, intelligent, hilarious, and non-judgmental person my life at that time. Words cannot express how sorry I am for her loss.
Helen was a mentor, a friend, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a social worker, and so many other things. She shared lots of stories with me about her wonderful children and grandchildren (who are probably teenagers by now!), who she was so deeply proud of. She was like a mother-figure to me, too. It was my first time living in another province, away from my family, and she made the experience so much easier. We often did our grocery shopping together, going in her little burgundy car to the local Sobeys. One time, I had run out of money in my account, and Helen graciously offered to pay until I could straighten things out. It was the first (and only) time that had happened to me right in the store, and I was so fortunate to have her there. My parents, being quite mortified by the whole thing, continue to remember Helen as "the one who helped you out of Sobeys fiasco"!
On the very first day of class (before we were roommates, and before I knew anyone) I had been up all night at the hospital with an allergic reaction to something. I was exhausted but was determined not to miss the first day. Somehow I mentioned this to Helen, who said, without hesitation, that if that were ever to happen again, I should call her, day or night. It was so touching. I don't even know if I knew her last name at that point. What a genuinely good human being she was. She will be missed dearly.
All my love.
Sarah

Dear family and friends of Helen,
I was a classmate of Helen's in the St. Thomas Social work program. News of Helen's death is being shared with the 25 of us in the program. We are all saddened to hear of your loss. She was a quiet but mighty spirit for us all. I was in awe of the dedication and love she had already brought to the world as she studied with plans of even greater accomplishments! A class picture with Helen is posted in my kitchen will be thinking of you.

I am part of Helen's graduating class from the Bachelor of Social Work at St. Thomas University in 2006. When I met Helen in late Spring, 2005, her story was incredible. Foster mother to so many, now on her own on a new path, after raising her beautiful daughters (who it was clear that she cherished). In such a small and intensive class (we started with 20), I was especially close with Helen. What a treasure to get to know and hold a place in this exceptional woman's life.
When we graduated, we wrote special notes to each other, to take with us and remember. Helen wrote to me: "Your hugs, your warmth, I will always carry with me. I love your enthusiasm. You amaze me with your wisdom for such a young girl (ha). If I had another daughter, I'd pick you. Love you always, Helen".
I don't know what I wrote to her at the time, but here's my updated message: "Helen, your influence on me has been greater than I'm sure you'd ever give yourself credit for. Although you could have 'schooled' us with your wealth of life experience, thank you so much for valuing each of us for our unique gifts. You were so wonderful at lifting up everyone with your non-judgmental ways. I'll keep you in my heart, I'm lucky that I got to pick you as my 'Social Work Mom'. Love you always, Clara."

I had the absolute honor of being in Helen's social work degree class at St.Thomas University. Since we were a small group, we were able to learn many things about each other in our very short time program. Helen had a special story and was so very proud of her family, both born to her and given to her by chance and life. She was also very private at times, so what she shared with us was important and cherished. When she spoke, we listened and hung on every word! I was deeply saddened to hear of her passing, and send my sincerest condolences to all of you reading this. You are so fortunate to have been connected to such an amazing, strong, and inspirational human being. She walked among us as an angel on Earth and now (unfortunately for us who loved her and will miss her) she has more than earned her new wings. Again, I am so sorry for your loss and send hope and prayers that you can find comfort in all of the wonderful memories that you have of her.

My most sincere condolences to the family of Helen Perez. She was a wonderful person and we were so fortunate to work with her over the last 10 years. Helen's insight and gentleness helped strengthen the bonds in the many families she worked to join through adoption. Helen's love for her family, especially her daughters and grand children was unwavering and she always spoke with loving pride about them. May the cherished memories of Helen bring comfort to all.

My condolences to the Perez family. I was one of those many touched by the kindness and love of Helen. One of her many foster girls back in Middleboro Ma . I was shown love and support I was in desperate need of. It was only 3 months of my childhood but it could of gone so differently hadnt she and Lisa , Cheryl, and at the time , baby Jen been placed in my path. Those days on dee bee circle I will never forget or replace. She was one of a kind. The only person I ever called Ma.
I always tell the story of “the best summer of my childhood “ she was funny and caring and tough.
When I got sick one week the dr prescribed a med that said this will make Tracy groggy. But it kept me awake and I started cleaning the whole house one night. She said guess we need to go get the medication that might make you hyper.
Love to all of you! Xo
