Obituary of Duart John Cooke
COOKE, Duart John
Age 87, Donkin
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father at the Glace Bay General Hospital on Saturday, June 4, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Dad resided all his life on the Donkin Highway and recently at the Victoria Haven Nursing Home. Born in White Plains, New York, he was the only son of Otto and Helena (Ellis) Cooke.
Dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be truly missed. A commercial fisherman for the majority of his life, dad loved the outdoors and when he retired from fishing he took up gardening and spent his retirement at home around the yard where he loved to be. Dad was a quiet man who kept close to his family. He loved watching CNN and always followed presidential elections.
Dad will be forever missed by daughters, Margie (Eric) MacLeod, St. Mary's, Ontario, Patsy (Ike) Hayes, Birch Grove; sons, Billy (Sandra), Broughton Rd., David (Suzie), Gardiner Road, grandchildren, Steven, Billy, Lisa, Angela, Jenna, Anthony, Jeremy; great grandchildren, Haille, Lukas, David, Hayden, Shayne, Brycen, Nathan, Shaylee and Tanys.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Viola (Smith) Cooke and his grandson, Tyler.
A funeral service, officiated by Fr. Leo Boone will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay with a lunch to follow.
A private family interment will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Reserve Mines.
Donations in Duart's memory may be made to C. B. Palliative Care or a charity of your choice. Family flowers only.

A special thank you to Dr. David Lee for his care and compassion and to the Nursing Staff on 3rd floor West and South for the care and compassion shown to our Dad for the many times he was in and out of hospital.
Fisherman's Prayer
The Lord is my Pilot, I shall not drift.
He lights me across the dark waters.
He steers me in deep channels. He keeps my Log.
He guides me by the Star of Holiness for His name's sake.
As I sail through the storms and tempests of life,
I will dread no danger for you are near me.
Your love and your care shelter me.
You prepare a harbour before me in the homeland of eternity.
You anoint the waves with oil so my ship rides calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight will be with me whenever I sail
And at the end of my voyage will rest in the Port of my Lord forever.
