William "Billy" MacKinnon, 85
Gardiner Mines
It is with broken hearts, that we the family announce the passing of William "Billy" MacKinnon, age 85 of Gardiner Mines on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the palliative care unit, CBRH, Sydney.
Born in South Bar, he was the son of the late Jim and Margaret (Collins) MacKinnon.
Billy was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was employed as a coal miner for many years. Billy was a gentle soul who was never seen without a smile on his face. Those who knew Billy, knew him to be a hard working man of great strength, generosity and integrity. He was a loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, brother and dear friend who will be deeply missed.
Billy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ellen (Boutilier) MacKinnon, three sons, Daniel (Brenda), Sydney, Arthur (Susie), Sydney, Steve (Lil), Gardiner Mines, one sister, Mary MacDonald, B.C., one brother, Martin MacKinnon, Southbar, six grandchildren, Tiffany, Courtney, Brena, Cailin, Tara, Scottie, three great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Boopie, Tiana, many extended family and great friends.
Billy was predeceased by his son, David and brothers, Fr. Art, Ernie, Dan, Reggie, Francis, Allan, Little Billy.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley is Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford followed by interment in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
