all Newfoundlanders loved Karl ... he was the director at our sectional tournaments, which he made enjoyable for all ... my favorite comment from Karl is "there are two reasons to be nice to your partner when they make a mistake, 1. they did not do it on purpose, 2. later in the day you will make a mistake and you would like the same treatment!
My other favorite story from Karl is he got a director call asking how much is 7N vulnerable doubled and redoubled?
Karl worked out the trick score is 40 plus 6x30 = 220 x 2 (doubled) x 2 (redoubled) = 880 + the game bonus 500 + the grand slam bonus 1500 + 50 for the double x2 for the redouble. Karl proudly announced 2980 when the player said I meant 7N doubled and redoubled down one !!!! 100 X 2 X 2 = 400
He was a man I admired
RIP Karl
best regards Kerry

Sincere condolences. I was very saddened upon hearing of Karl’s passing. He was such a close friend of the family and one of my favourite humans. I have had the privilege of many visits with Karl, Kerry and family over the years with many conversations and of course the sharing of many many jokes with Karl. He was instrumental in making my graduation party at our house most memorable and I smile even now remembering his jokes accompanied by my ad lib piano playing. I think it was my Moms sister who said about about 4am that day “Karl, isn’t is time for you to go home?” :) He certainly was a presence that day and many other days!
A wonderful man, an influence on my life with words of wisdom he may not have known I paid attention to. Karl will always hold a special place in my heart and in our families hearts.
I was just reminding my oldest son about Karl a couple of weeks ago when I was telling him Karl’s infamous joke about the Bell Ringer. Those who know it can attest there was no one who could tell it like Karl!

To all the members of the Hicks and extended families I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences at this difficult time on Karl's passing. We shared some wonderful and happy memories as first cousins in Scotchtown and River Ryan during our growing-up years, and shared common interests and teaching careers in our adult years. Karl's insatiable sense of humor and wit was his trademark and always a treat whenever we crossed paths along life's journey. I know there are no words one can express to ease your burden and loss, but I hope, in time, you will find some peace and comfort in this expression of sympathy. We know , in our faith and belief in the Resurrection, that Karl is now reunited with his Mom, Dad, and other members of the Hicks-Chesal families (and with his saviour) forever. We shall indeed miss his earthly presence but be assured our paths will cross again when this journey here is finished. Rest in peace, dear cousin, and God bless you all during this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
In sincere sympathy, Joe Chesal (Antigonish, NS)

I first met Karl in 1961 when he arrived on our residence floor at Mt. Alison University in Sackville, NB. I was in my second year, living on the second floor of Bennett House. We wondered: Who was this "strange" guy from Cape Breton? One of the first things we did to new residents, was to "throw" them into the shower. We started to do this to Karl, but he had other ideas; he "faked" a faint, so we ceased the shower routine. When we realized that it was all an act, we knew Karl was a quick-thinking guy. He displayed this wit for the rest of his stay at Mt. "A". Another time, he convinced everyone that he had been hypnotized by my roommate. He carried out this deception for days. He was given a post-hypnotic suggestion that a "dead dog" was lying in front of the bathroom door. He was so conscientious that, for days, he continued to "Step" over the dog every time he entered the bathroom. Later in the '60s, I became a member of the Fossil Club. I could regale you for hours about many of the antics Karl was involved with - but I won't do that here. Suffice to say: Karl was probably the most naturally "funny" person I have ever met. I didn't realize that he had designed the humourous Christmas cards we received every year; we looked forward to them!! One other thing: a few of us taught Karl to play bridge at Mt. "A"; little did we know how well our instruction would turn out.
Kerry, although I think I met you only once, I believe you brought out the best in Karl; our thoughts and good wishes are extended to you and your family at this time. Karl, may you rest in peace!

I knew Karl for approximately 27 years. I had the honor to direct a few midnight zip K.O.'s so that he could participate. We always said we would play together at some point which never did come to pass. He was always my go to expert for any questions about the play of a particular hand, new conventions that I thought might work well in the system I was playing, or the proper ruling on a call I had at the club level. He was always the best person that I could get any of those answers I was looking for from. I will miss him greatly but I am sure that when the time comes we will enjoy a game together in a better place. My sincerest condolences to his family; if there might be anything even the smallest of requests that I could in some way help to ease your sadness please do not hesitate to ask. I may be a distance away but my car drives comfortably.
Respectfully yours

Through the years, he always believed in me, supported me and challenged me. I used to love the stories he shared during "down times" at tournaments, his wit and jokes made me laugh. We were lucky enough to spend breakfasts before tournaments with him and Kerry, with more story telling, discussing his children and grandchildren that he lit up when he spoke about. I had the opportunity to play on a team with Karl, both online and live and he was the perfect teammate! Great bridge player, kind and understanding. He never had a bad word to say. Anytime I went away for a tournament, people would ask where I was from. When I said Nova Scotia, I heard over and over again " Oh, you must know Karl Hicks? " Karl's spirit with live on forever through Maritime Bridge. I will miss him more than words can express. My deepest condolences to Kerry and his family. The King Is Dead
The formidable Karl Hicks passed away. I am so sorry Kerry. All of our hearts from The Halifax Bridge Studio seriously go out to you my friend. Karl has been there from the beginning of almost all of our Bridge experiences. Dating back to the early 70's. Karl was a giver. A giver to Maritime Bridge. A giver to all his friends. His level of excellence was noted in 1973 in an article by Richard Brown - editor of the Maritime Bridge Line:
"Should Karl Hicks ever decide to become a participant rather than that of organizer, only then will we be able to determine if it is
possible for anyone to do a better job. I for one hope that we never have to find out."
Karl visited my home twice in Melbourne Australia. Once with his lovely Kerry. We had a hell of time together. Can't say enough about their visit. What fun they were. I flew into San Francisco a few years back - to play Bridge at the Nationals with Ken Eisner on a team with Karl and Leo Weniger. I am glad I had the experience of seeing him on this side of the director's desk! If there is one thing to say about what Karl meant to me - it is this. He made me laugh. When a small group surrounded him at a tournament - it would invariably break-out into laughter. Karl had told a joke. Often a colorful one. That is what Karl did. He made people laugh. Gosh he was so skilful - in so many ways. Thanks Karl for everything you gave to me. I will miss you mate. Job well done.

Karl was always open to a good joke. As funny as it might be, Karl was only seconds away from topping it with a new story of his own! At the bridge table, Karl always insisted to be respectful and polite to your partner. He would say as soon as you get upset with your partner, because of a mistake they made, you were guaranteed to make one much bigger in a very short time. “Just save yourself the embarrassment!”, he would state, before the tournament began, “ Be polite and discuss the situation later away from the bridge table.” Please take your strength from Karl's strength in dying and relive your beautiful memories from your experiences with him in life.

I am shocked to read of Karl's passing (or Mr. Hicks, as we called him in high school). He was, by far, one of my favorite teachers. He was always challenging us and making us think. And, of course, when we'd give a wrong answer, he would open his desk drawer, take out his pretend gun (index finger and thumb) and shoot us. We had lots of laughs but we learned from him and we respected him because he commanded respect and deserved it. May all your wonderful memories sustain you until you meet him again. God bless. xo

Sending love and condolences to Kerry and all my Hicks cousins. A man with a spectacular sense of humour and a larger than life presence, Karl will be missed.

The news of Karl's passing was indeed sad news. He was hands down the best teacher I ever had and the lessons he taught went far beyond mathematics. He was the first teach I remember who talked "to" his students rather than "at" them. Karl along with his father spearheaded a crazy idea back in 1974/75 that he would take an uncultured group of Cape Breton teens to Europe. Crazy...yes. Did it happen...yes. Shortly after news of Karl's death broke, emails began circulating among the members of this travel group, some of whom I have not seen/heard from in many many years. It seems everyone has a Karl story to tell and everyone wants to tell it...that is the impact Karl's death has had on all of us some 40+ years later. I hope every student of today is lucky enough to have a "Mr. Hicks" at some point of their education.
The deepest condolences to Kerry and family.

I was so saddened to hear about Karl's passing. He was a great teacher, not just of math, but of life, a mentor to all who knew him, a friend and above all else an outstanding human being. He was certainly one-of-a-kind who left his mark in this life and will be missed by all. Rest in Peace.
