Joseph Michael Larade, age 88, passed away peacefully November 16, 2018 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney where he resided for the past 9 years.
Joe was born in New Waterford March 12, 1930 to the late Simeon and Nora (Cathcart) Larade. He was a member of Mount Carmel Parish St Leonard’s and later St Anne’s Parish in Glace Bay.
Joe served with the Armed Forces R.C.A.F stationed in Saskatchewan. He later worked in the coal mines, drove taxi in his spare time, and was employed with the Dept. Of National Defense at Glace Bay Armories and Victoria Park Armories until his retirement in 1995. He had a deep love and affection for animals and he and Georgina fed every kind they encountered over the years while living on Centerville Street.
Joe was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12 Sydney. He was an avid pool player and played several times a week until his illness.
Besides his parents Joe was predeceased by his brother Clare and sister Helen and his loving partner of 40 years Georgina McNeil. He is survived by his brothers Greg, Dartmouth, Bob(Anne) , Comex BC, sister-in-law Sharon Larade and his special cousin Agnes Romeo, New Waterford.
He is also survived by Georgina’s children, Joan Graham, Halifax, Darlene (Zahid) Ahmed, Leicester, England and Brian and Debbie (Matt) McNeil, New Waterford and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
At Joe’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Private burial in Mount Carmel cemetery. Donations to the local food bank, Joe’s favorite charity or to the S.P.C.A.
At this time the family would like to thank Dr Archibald and the nurses and staff at Miners Lane for the love and care given to Joe over the past 9 years. They were not only caregivers but great friends who share our sadness.
