Obituary of Ellen Hanes

Ellen ‘Nellie’ Hanes, R.N. New Waterford We, the family of Ellen ‘Nellie’ Hanes regret to announce her passing at home in New Waterford on August 27, 2016. Born on October 12, 1927 in England, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Eva (Jones) Gaskell. Nellie was a registered nurse, working her career in Ontario and at the New Waterford General and Consolidated Hospital in New Waterford, retiring in 1992. Nellie enjoyed a good strong cup of tea, reciting poetry and demonstrating her knowledge of Morse code and sign language. She loved to sing and dance and had a love of animals. A gentle, kind woman, Nellie enjoyed the friendship of many and in her nursing career, she cared for many people. Nellie loved to travel, taking a trip from British Columbia to Cape Breton on the back of a motor cycle. She enjoyed everybody and everything. Nellie is survived by her daughter, Judy (Brent) Richards, British Columbia; sons, Rick (Rita), New Waterford, Roy (Mindy), Ottawa and John (Chris), New Waterford special nephew, Brian Burke, cousin and special sister Agnes MacDougall(Fabe). Also surviving are grandchildren, Joseph (Holly), Mark (Janie –Lynn), Jeffrey, Ilana, Jesse, Rachel, Richard ( Rachel) and Christa (Terrance), great grandchildren, Jadeyn, Avery, Landon, Tanner and Kevin, nieces and nephews, Sharon (MacInnis) Dornbush, Janice and Lloyd Gaskell. Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her sister, Rita Burke and her brother, Ivor Gaskell. As per her wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral service for Nellie will be held on Wednesday August 31,2016 at 2 p.m. , at All Saint’s Anglican Church, New Waterford with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will follow in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Reception to follow in All Saints Anglican church hall. Donations in memory of Nellie may be made to All Saints Anglican Church or charity of choice.
