It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irving Gurney Clements, age 70 on Tuesday, March 12th, 2019 at his residence in Dominion.

Born in Glace Bay, Gurney was the son of the late Ellsworth and Jeannette (Munroe) Clements from Bridgeport.

Gurney worked at Devco for many years as an industrial electrician. He was a former Kinsmen member as well as a volunteer with AFTEC and was actively involved with the Cursillo Movement. Gurney enjoyed playing baseball and hockey, his favourite team was the Maple Leafs. Hunting and spending time at his bungalow brought him much pleasure. But mostly he will be remembered as a family oriented man who loved his children and grandchildren dearly.

Gurney is survived by his wife, Doreen (MacMullin) Clements, his four children, Melissa Clements (John), North Sydney, Stephen Clements, Gardiner Mines, Jacqueline (Tommy) Sampson, New Waterford, Rebecca (Dan) Boutilier, Dominion, two sisters, Donelda Clements, Bridgeport, Wanda (Eugene) Snow, Chezzetcook, four brothers, Reggie (Cavelle),Glace Bay, Kevin, Halifax, Randy (Sylvia), Dominion and Darren “Dee” Clements, Dominion.

Gurney will be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren, Brett, Tyler, Makayla, Lylah Rae, Owen, Connor, Emily and nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Gurney was predeceased by his brother, Alexander in infancy and his niece, Tara Morgan.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, March 17th from 7-9 p.m. followed by a funeral service on Monday at 2 pm and a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating.

Interment will be at a later date in Christ Church Anglican Cemetery, South Head. Donations in memory of Gurney can be made to palliative care, VON, Diabetic Association or a charity of one’s choice.
