Good afternoon Laffin Family,
My name is Sarah Hall. My family and I would like to pass our condolences on to your family on the passing of your father and grandfather. My Great Uncle, Kenneth R. Donaldson was a member of 434 Squadron, Crew 88 with Mr. Laffin in WW2. I was fortunate enough to connect with him through letters a few years back. What a wonderful man he was to correspond with me and send me pictures of your family in Nova Scotia. It was amazing to make that connection and I am inspired that he made the absolute most of his life after the war.
On behalf of the Hall and Niesing families, we send you our sincere condolences.

To Linda Laffin and Family:
I have heard that you recently lost your Daddy. I am so sorry over your personal loss.
Your Daddy was a great man in many ways. Just on the war effort, the D-Day commemorations were held only a couple of weeks back. It’s remarkable to know that your Daddy was one of those brave souls who liberated France and eventually all of Europe from Nazis Germany. It’s scary to imagine where this world would be without their successful campaign.
This is a sad time for you and family. May you all find comfort in the happy memories you had with your Daddy. May you also find comfort in the many contributions he made for a safer and better world.
Please accept my condolences, and may he rest in peace.

Maureen, Linda and family,
Our deepest condolences go out to you and your family. Mike was a true Canadian and one of the most extraordinary people that ever came from New Waterford. A war hero, philantrophist, he gave to society a lot more than he ever received. He was always a very caring, compassionate person with a sense of humour that made him stand above the rest. Pat and I were so glad that we had a chance to celebrate his 101st birthday. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Linda, Maureen and family, Miriam and I were saddened to learn of the recent passing of your father. As you know, Dr. mike was one of a kind and a great Nova Scotian and Canadian. He was truly a free spirit, with a heart of gold, compassion for those in need, always with a new joke at hand and fists of steel ready for anyone silly enough to run afoul of his good nature. Mike enjoyed life, and we enjoyed him. We are sure that he and Doris are looking down now on their beloved daughters , knowing that they raised two wonderful and kind ladies who shared their love for life. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most

Wishing all of your families our sympathy in the death of your Dad. I heard so much about your Dad & your Mom from my parents, Wilf & Snookie Gorman from (Chatham.N.B.) now the Miramichi. Your Dad looked after my Dad when he arrived at the POW Cap after Dad was turned over from the Gestapo following his 6+ months of evading the enemy with the help of many in the resistance after he was shot down in the Netherlands during his 33rd Bomber Comand run. I have a copy of a CBC radio interview that was done with both of them talking about this (of course the interview had some humor at that time). Your parents & mine stayed in touch for many years with pictures, letters & cards always meeting up at many POW Conventions. Dad died in 2006 & Mom died in 2010 & we received condolences from your folks.
Again we wish you strength at this sad yet a celebratory time of your Dads life.

Dear Linda, and Maureen,
Sorry to hear of Mike's passing, my deepest condolences to you, and family. I would like to share a few memories of my own; My first contact with Mike was during my research into my uncle Clarence, whom served along side Mike in the same Aircrew in 434 Squadron. We had numerous phone conversations, and letter writing.
In June 2004 we met in New Waterford, and I had the honour of staying at his residence. I still recall when he showed me my room, I was in the doghouse in backyard, a sign was attached with my name beside "Brandy"? Doris did not see the humour but Mike and I certainly did.
Doris and Mike were very welcoming and wonderful hosts. We all had a good visit, and he provided a wealth of history about the aircrew, my uncle, numerous pictures, and their adventures. Our friendship continued for years to come, I still have all the letters he wrote, and small items of memorabilia he sent.
As mentioned in an earlier condolence, I don't think anyone will be able to replicate Mike, serving for his country, and communities in N.S. He was definitely an Honourable man, I will miss him, as we all will.
Kind regards, Alan

Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. I had the pleasure of sitting beside Mike in the NS Legislature when he returned in 1981. This was a real joy as I learned a lot and enjoyed his great sense of humor and vast experience. Shortly after that, Mike became the Minister of Housing and with the quickly growing Forest Hills development in Cole Harbour being in my riding, I found myself dealing with Mike and his department almost on a weekly basis. The cooperation and good will were always "first class'. He helped solve lots of problems both large and small for the residents.
You can be very proud of his many contributions. He has left an indelible mark.
Kindest Regards,

To Mike’s family and extended family our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you all. Mike was a friend of our Dad and Mom, Jim and Barbara Gough. Perhaps Doris was related to our Grandmother MacKinnon Gough, although I am not sure. Mike was just 7 years younger than our dad and I remember after our dad died in 1964, finding in our dad’s desk, letters to him from Mike. Then when I ran in 1979 to become a School Board representative, Mike called to congratulate and encourage me with words of wisdom and to tell me how very pleased my dad would have been.
Many times throughout the coming years Mike would call to see how things were going and to offer any help he could give. We were blessed indeed to know such a strong and kindhearted man. I can almost hear the ceilidh going on in heaven now. God bless you all! Love & hugs, Viola & Ivan Doncaster.

Linda.
I read your father’s obit in the Herald this morning and I was reminded again of the amazing generation of people born in the early 20th century that industrial Cape Breton seemed to nurture. These people came of age during the great depression. Many fought in WWII or were directly affected by it. Growing up in industrial Cape Breton, hard and dangerous work was a way of life. In these difficult times, I think people learned to rely on their community and they learned that giving back to that community was a high calling. Your father was a product of his environment, but you could tell from his obituary that he was distinctively his own man. His accomplishments and his service are a source of pride, not just for your family, but for many that just recognized his name and knew his work and reputation. I just want to say how very sorry I am for your loss of your father. I know that this is a sad and difficult time for you. Still, it is a blessing that you had him in your life for so long. Take care.

Dear Linda and Maureen and your families,
I just learned in the newspaper of Mike's dying. What a great man your father was. The obituary captured so much of Mike--his courage, caring, humbleness, zest for living--and, of course, his "larger than life personality." I always admired Mike, not only for his innumerable accomplishments, but for his person. I just found him so solid--a person comfortable in his own skin and committed to doing what needed to be done. Though I am sad he is gone, I feel lucky to have known him. Mike's was a life well lived.

Mike really was one of a kind. As a young man he stared death in the face and sent it running for cover. He not only understood loyalty, he lived it throughout his long and storied life. Kind, compassionate, competitive and occasionally cantankerous, he wore his heart on his sleeve. The love for his family and his joie de vivre knew no bounds. I was honoured to be one of his many seatmates during his years as an MLA and deeply privileged to be his friend. RIP Mike.

Dear Linda & Maureen:The 'political Irish Patriarch' has left us but his memories and legacy of service to Town,Province and Country will live on in the minds and hearts of all whose lives he touched in so many ways, including my own. After having being young 'Springpig' gaffer and Dr.Mike's patient,in the 1950's he always laid claim When we met up again in the Legislature that he helped launch my career with a few Laffin Twists and tugs loosened up my jawbones and when it came to talking he would proclaim(proudly I think!) that it is all his fault and hadn't stopped talking since! His common sense and Irish wit and humor made him a great addition to our Caucus and Cabinet!Never shy about expressing his opinions but his wise and sage advice was always welcome. It was my honor to have served with him,and will cherish those memories. With these thoughts in mind Evelyn and I send along our sympathy and condolence to you and all the family. And as the old Irish toast ☘goes "May you be in heaven a half hour before the Devil even knows you're dead'!!
