Obituary of Catherine Mary Schima, New Waterford

Catherine Schima

New Waterford

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Catherine Mary Schima at the age of 90 on Monday May 27, 2019 at Victoria Heaven Nursing Home.

Born in New Waterford on March 4, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Janie McCann.

As a young girl,Catherine inherited the nick name Cupie Doll and has been known by Cupie until her passing. She worked at her mother’s restaurant as a young girl, meeting ,in her words, some interesting characters, including one man who turned out to be the love of her life, John Edward ‘Fats’ Schima. Together they had two sons, Wayne and Shawn, to whom she quickly became mother and father upon John’s death when the boy’s were young.

When not in one of her gardens or visiting her sister, Blondie, when she was able, Cupie could be found out for one of her daily walks around town. There is so much to say about our mom. She was the best part of us, Wayne and Shawn.

Catherine will be sadly missed by her sons, Wayne (Sharon), New Brunswick and Shawn , New Waterford; her grandchildren, Shane (Natasha) and Melissa (Nick); two great grandchildren, Noah and Oliver; sisters, Blondie (the late Caridi Possibon) and Sadie (Frances) Holloway.

Besides her mother, she was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, John ‘Fats’ Schima; and her sister, Anna Jane McAulay.

A very special thank you to all of those involved in Mom’s care from the nurses to the doctors to the visitors. A very special thank you to my best friend, Thomas MacKenzie who helped me through this time Shawn and anyone who brightened up her days and made life a little easier we’ll be forever grateful.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery at a later date.

In memory of mom, show an act of kindness, help someone in need, or plant a flower; all of these were important to her.   God Bless
