Trudy was one of my favourite teachers and a wonderful neighbour of ours growing up near Central School. The last time I spoke with her was many years ago when my children were still in elementary school. She asked how they were doing and I explained my son was having difficulty that year with one particular teacher - he couldn't seem to please her despite getting high marks and completing all his assignments on time. The teacher seemed to take pleasure in embarrassing him in front of other students and rarely offered a word of encouragement or praise. Trudy held my hand and said, "Shirley, some people are born teachers; some others should never be allowed to enter the profession. You tell Adam to hang in there and keep being an awesome student." That was Trudy.
My sincere condolences Patty and family on your loss. Your mum left a legacy of learning in her wake for which I'm grateful. She instilled in me a love of books, of reading, of proper punctuation! She will never be forgotten by me.

Mrs. Cull...even though it's been over 45 years, I remember you fondly and with great respect. You were one of the first teachers to recognize the difficulty of my childhood family situation and always took the time to rest your hand on my shoulder to ask how I was doing...that I will always be grateful for. You fostered my love for books at a very young age with your enormous collection in our classroom...and the "back corner" reading sessions. I can still see you teaching Randy Perin to say I-land instead of iz-land when he was reading parts of Treasure Island out loud in class...grade 1...you corrected him with care and not ridicule - that has always stuck in my mind and often keeps me in check when working with my own students today. I have easily read several hundred books in my lifetime starting from your book shelf all those years ago. You nicknamed myself, Glen Matheson and Kevin White as the three musketeers something that we have all remembered. I was never more proud to look at my 3rd place Education Week poster in Udovins window..."Smooth Seas Ahead With Education" was my slogan ...your idea...to encourage my love of drawing ships on the ocean. You have influenced thousands with your love of teaching and the ripple effect that has caused...your memory and legacy is strong and far reaching. Rest peacefully as you have earned your beautiful place in heaven.
Patrick Drake.

As a retired teacher like my sister Trudy, reading your tribute was truly extra special. I often wonder what became of many of my students I taught in Nova Scotia. I do enjoy having parents of siblings I taught in Calgary keep in contact with me. Patti, Trudy's daughter was so very moved and sincerely appreciated your message.
