Obituary of Helen 'Nellie' Catherine Chiasson, New Waterford
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen 'Nellie' Catherine Chiasson, 94, of New Waterford on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Maple Hill Manor. Born in New Waterford on July 17th, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Patrick D. and Mary Ellen (Gallant) Chiasson. Nellie graduated from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto as a Registered Nurse where she worked in this profession at Point Edward and Northside General for 32 years. Nellie thoroughly enjoyed being a nurse as it allowed her to help those in need. This was a quality Nellie carried over into her everyday life. Whether it was helping out those who were struggling, or giving to local organizations and charities, Nellie could always be relied on for support. If Nellie was not out lending a helping hand, you could find her in her garden where she spent many hours doing what she loved. Nellie was also a devout Christian who dedicated much of her life to her church. Nellie is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Patricia who resided with her for a period of time. She is also survived by Peggy Gatto who took wonderful care of her over the past several years. Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by brothers, Henry, Leo 'Lem', Charlie, Simon and Dan; sisters, Evangeline, Margaret, Mary Alice and Sister Mary Ann as well as her nephew, Ralph Gatto, who was like a son to her. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Once circumstances permit, a funeral mass will be held at the Parish Church of St. Leonard with burial to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. An announcement will be made at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
