Obituary of Theresa Marie Currie, New Waterford
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Theresa Currie on Wednesday April 22, 2020 at the age of 92. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Christina (Miller) Hines. Theresa moved to Thompson Street at the age of two years old and lived on the same street for the next 87 years.
Surviving are her children, Francis of Nine Mile River, NS and Neila (Leo) of New Waterford. She is also survived by her pride and joy, Francis’s children, Virginia Currie and Neil Currie.
In addition to her parents, Theresa was predeceased by her husband, Neil Currie in 1983. She was also predeceased by her three brothers, Alexander Hines, John O’Neil Hines and Martin Rendell Hines.
The Currie’s were her family. Surviving are her sisters-in-law, Margie Treige, Thelma Mackie, Betty Currie, Peggy Currie and Marie Currie. She was predeceased by her in-laws, Patsy Roach, Nora MacNamara, Anglorm Currie, Anna Currie, John Currie, Ambrose Currie, Gerald Currie, Joe Currie, Allister Currie and Leonard Currie.
Education was very important to mom. She was fifteen years old for her grade 12 year, writing her provincial exams on her 16th birthday. We often joked that she could write our tests after quizzing us before we left for school. Friendship was also something mom valued. We saw the loyal bond she maintained with her childhood friends, especially Mary (MacNeil) Gillis who was a true friend to the very end.
Theresa spent many years working at various offices in New Waterford. She began her career at the Credit Union. She often told stories about her time at Benny Epstein’s and Woolworth’s. The friendships made with the staff always brought a smile to her face.
Theresa was a very private person and a devoted Catholic. While dementia has slowly taken away the mother we knew, she could still be heard reciting The Our Father.
In keeping with Theresa’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Funeral Mass will be held at the Parish of Saint Leonard’s Church at a later date. Donations in Theresa’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, SPCA or charity of one’s choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
We would like to thank Dr Ajuwon for his years of excellent care. We also want to thank the staff of Maple Hill Manor. Your care and compassion this last year has been incredible. We knew she was in good hands. A special thank you to Kendra and Joey for allowing us to take turns being with our mom during her last hours. For this, we are truly grateful.
