Obituary of Effie Nugent, New Waterford

We, the family of Effie (MacMillan) Nugent, announce her peaceful passing on April 23, 2020 at the age of 100. Born in Upper Grand Mira, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Penny (Currie) MacMillan. Effie moved to Waterford as a young woman and married Edward ‘Ned’ Nugent. Effie is survived by her children, Leona Nugent, New Waterford, Roseanne (Donnie) Manzine, Ontario, Dan (Thelma) Nugent, Newfoundland and Ellen (George) Sinclair, New Brunswick, as well as her son-in-law, George McSween, New Waterford. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michelle Tranquilla, Craig McSween, Nadine Ratchford, Daniel and Jonathan Manzine, Matthew Sinclair, Genevieve Nugent and Edward and Michael Nugent; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Effie was predeceased by her husband, Ned (1983), son, Michael (1966) and daughters, Marguerite McSween (2016) and Sharon Nugent (2019). She is also predeceased by her siblings, sisters, Gertie Whalen, Agnes Abbass, Margaret MacNeil, Annie Russell; brothers, Hughie, Duncan, John Peter, Dan and Garnet MacMillan, as well as sister-in-law and dear friend, Nellie Pinkerton (1985). Throughout her life, Effie was active in her church and community, being a long standing member of the former Mt. Carmel Parish CWL and a 25 plus year volunteer with the Joy Program. Effie had an active social life and she enjoyed regularly taking part in cribbage games until only recently. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. When circumstances permit, a celebration of Effie’s life will be held. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
