Dear Wrathall Family,
I grew up and attended school with Gary and his brother Dave.He was a good friend and although we lost touch after I moved to Halifax I will always remember him as a great stand up guy.We shared similar careers, me a police officer and Gary a Correctional officer. We crossed paths a couple of times in our work and picked up our friendship very easily.
My sincere condolences to Gary’s family and may all your cherished memories help sustain you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Dave MacDonald

My sincere condolences to Gary's family.
I started school with Gary. I hadn't seen Gary in many years as I moved with my family to Ontario at the end of Grade 7. Wondered over the years how all the Wrathall gang were doing. R.I.P Gary

I was shocked and saddened to here of Gary’s passing. My heartfelt condolences goes out to the family. It was an honour and priviledge to work with Gary at CBCF. Gary was a great guy to work with especially his sense of humour. He loved playing the trumpet at 3 o’clock in the morning. He was a mentor to all. He was the man, the myth, the legend in corrections.God speed Gary.

Sorry to hear of Gary's passing! Last time I saw him was in Kingston,NS many years ago. He was staying at the same motel
when I ran into him in the parking area. Couldn't believe the odds! We caught up a little( we had gone to school in Reserve together) before I had to leave to visit my Nana in hospital and when I got back it was too late then left early the next morning so missed seeing him again. Always remember him as a really nice guy!

My fondest memories of growing up with Gary as my big brother probably started in our teenage years,,,, the 60’s,,,, what a decade,,,, with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elvis, muscle cars,, you name it.
When I turned 16, Gary taught me to drive. I thought “squealing the wheels” every time you pulled away, especially going from gravel to pavement was “NORMAL”,,,, just as normal as taking corners on two wheels, and driving 80 miles per hour (years before 80 kilometers per hour was the speed limit).
Before Gary and I had our own wheels, the engine on Dad’s car never had a chance to cool. Dad never complained about the mountain of bald tires in the back yard, he just kept buying more, and said he remembered being a teenager. I think it was when we both got our own cars and started buying our own tires that our driving styles moderated.
Next came the time when Gary and I and our friends all had motorcycles. That was when the Hell’s Angels movie was around, and of course we attempted to do the stunts they performed, like jumping ramps, etc. That was a disaster!!!!
In the next chapter of our teenage years we both had Volkswagen Bugs. You haven’t lived until you’ve driven a bug, with no heater, all winter in Cape Breton.
As we became young adults, Gary became my best friend and was “Best Man” at my (and Trisha’s) wedding 50 years ago this coming June. I never imagined that he wouldn’t be here for it.
After we moved away from Cape Breton we came home every year to see our families and to enjoy our annual lobster boil in Gary’s garage. Aaron and Kelly really enjoyed these events, both because they loved lobster, and loved Gary, who was their “ favorite uncle”, who always entertained them with his jokes and impressions.
With the covid-19 pandemic closing the borders we were not able to get home to see Gary during his struggle, and now can’t be there for his funeral. Even though we can’t be there in person, we are with Gary in spirit, thoughts and prayers.
Farewell Bro, I love you. I’ll see you on the other side.
Dave

Hi, on a serious note, I want to let Gerrine and the boys, that my heart goes out to you all, Gerrine who has lost the love of her life and the boys who have lost a great Dad, Gary loved you all so much and was proud of you all, but my heart also goes out to his grandchildren, who will never know what a very loving and kind their grandfather was, Gary only got 3 years to be a grandad to 2 beautiful girl, and only a couple of months with his grandson. I know the hurt and pain that you are going through, but you cherish their memories, and keep Gary alive in your hearts and with everything good you do. It is hard to lose a parent at any age, but sadly life goes on, and you have to put one foot in front of the other to get through, there is no time limit on grief. So one day at a time, and it helps to talk about Gary as a husband, father and granddad and of course a son and brother. Gary rest in peace and know that you are sadly missed not only by your family but all the cousins you grew up with and we also remember all the good times we had growing up together, FOEVER LOVED and NEVER FORGOTTEN

Growing up Gary and I were like brother and sister, we spent alot of time together and he was always with me, I was his protector, there are some stories to share about Gary, and he always had a smile on his face and could be a devil at times. I think the funniest story was when Gary was about 11 yrs old, and the school we went to, there were 3 grades to a class room, Gary was in grade 5 and I was in grade 6, anyway there was a girl that liked Gary, but Gary didn't realize that she liked him alot, anyway there was a baseball field behind our school with a grandstand, one day Gary and some of the boys were sitting down there when this girl went down and she sat beside Gary, well he did not think anything of it as he got along with everyone and he and this girl talked many times before, well, I see Gary coming running up wiping his mouth with a sleeve and I asked him what was wrong, he said " that one put her lips on mine and spit on me , go and slap her for me " , I started to laugh, I told him that she kissed him and he said he didn't like it, anyway, me not knowing too much but just picking up things the older kids talked about, I said "well the way I hear it, is that someday I will like boys and you will like girls " so as neither one of us were too happy with that, we made a pack that neither one of us were going to bother with boys or girls, it was just going to be us, see how well that turned out, I married and he married (HAHA), anyway when he finally had his first date and for awhile I use to ask him if any girl spit on him lately, we had lots of laugh over that one, Gary, I will always love you like a brother and although we did not see one another too much over the yrs, you were and always be special too me, love you bro and God Bless, forever loved and never forgotten, Barb

Gary and I had a lot of good times over the years. Gary and I were best friends growing up and we spent a lot of time at each others houses. We shared an apartment together for a couple of years Playing in a band, racing, parties and a few drinks over the years. Gary was always upbeat and had something funny to say. I know he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. To Gerrine and her family, my deepest condolences.
