We the Schwartz family are sad to hear of Ray's passing and our heartfelt sympathies to his family.
I remember Ray working with our dad at the dinning room table on the book “Cape Breton Island A Select View”. The book was a great tribute to the mining heritage of New Waterford and a great educational addition to the Coal Bowl.

Mr. Kavanaugh was my favorite teacher. His subject matter was "The World". His lesson was "Make it better". I always looked forward to his class. I would leave inspired and deep in thought...and then not pay attention in the next class...probably chemistry.
His focused efforts leave a lasting legacy in the Cape Breton community, especially through development of our tourism assets like the airport and marketing agency Destination Cape Breton. He helped New Waterford move forward after the mines closed, doing as much as humanly possible with the cards he was dealt. Cape Breton owes a lot of its post-industrial successes to Ray's imagination and persistence.
To his wife Carmie, Jamie and brothers and extended family - I'm so sorry for your loss. May your many fond memories of him give you comfort during this sorrowful time.
