It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Nelson “Nessie” Murrant, age 78 on December 7th, 2020, after a short but courageous battle with ALS. He passed away at the CBRH, Sydney in the palliative care unit surrounded by his family. Born in Glace Bay, Nelson was the son of the late William and Blanche (Brann) Murrant. Nelson is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sandra (Beaton); his son and best friend, Parker (Debbie); his granddaughters, Bethany (Colin) and Laura (Jenna) and his brother, Eddie (Blanche). He is also survived by many brother and sister in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Special mention to his niece and nephew, Allison and Christopher who had a special place in his heart. He was also very excited to meet his first great grandson in just a few short weeks. Nelson was predeceased by his brothers, Jimmy and Stanley and his sisters, Joyce Hooper and Ella Stoddard. Nelson was a well respected carpenter by trade, a member of the Carpenters Union (Local 1588) and employed with NS Power until retirement. He was a life-long Detroit Red Wings fan and a proud member of the Cape Breton Sledge Hammers Hockey Team. He was a long standing member of the Masonic Lodge (No.36) and a proud member of the Shriners. He enjoyed spending his summers at the family bungalow in the Mabou Coal Mines and his winters in Treasure Island, FL with his Satellite family. He was the most happy when he was spending time with family and friends. Nelson was a true gentleman, he welcomed everyone with a smile and did not have a mean thing to say about anyone. He was admired by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him and will be truly missed by all. A special thank you to Dr. Melanie Adams and the staff at the ICU and Palliative Care unit at the CBRH. Cremation has taken place under the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Glace Bay. There will be a memorial service held at a later date.
