Obituary of Joan (Nearing) Fowler, Glace Bay

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Joan (Nearing) Fowler of No. 2, Glace Bay on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay with her daughter Viola by her side. Joan was 82 years old. Joan had spent the last 3 and a half years at Seaview Manor Nursing Home and we the family would like to thank everyone who had a part of taking care of and getting to know this amazing woman. Born in Glace Bay, Joan was the daughter of the late James and Margaret Nearing. She was a member of the former St. John's Church, No. 2, Glace Bay. Joan once worked at the Heavy Water Plant in the kitchen/canteen, at Terrance Manor as a cook and baker and Victoria Haven Nursing Home in the laundry department. She had so much compassion for all the residents. Joan was a member of the pensioners club and volunteered her time at the gift shop and serving bedtime snacks to patients of Glace Bay General. She enjoyed baking, knitting, walking, spending time with friends, and most importantly family time. Joan always had the teapot on and everyone was welcome. Joan is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Bob) Mitchell, Viola (Lawrence), Glace Bay, & two sons, Joe (Gina), Ontario, David, Glace Bay, son in law, Shawn Neville, Ontario and her best friend of 70 years, Audrey Nightingale. Joan is also survived by her pride and joy in life, her 10 grandchildren, Ashley, David, Edmund, Alanna, Justin, Leanne, Colin, Michael, Jennifer, Amanda and 12 beautiful great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband of 54 years, David Alexander Fowler, her son, John James Fowler, daughter, Georgina Neville, grandchildren, Lloyd Canavan, Christopher Neville & Gillian Neville, sisters, Viola & Bridgette, brothers, Lawrence, Jim & Charlie. There will be no visitation owing to government COVID restrictions set in place for funeral home facilities. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning, January 6th, 2021 at 10 am in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Fr. Duaine Devereaux presiding. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the Red Cross Foundation or Alzheimer's Society or any charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to V.J.
