Obituary of Bernice Violet King, River Ryan

We, the family of Bernice Violet King, are saddened to announce her passing at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on Mar. 16, 2021. Born in New Waterford to Barney and Harriet Quinn in 1938, Bernice was raised in River Ryan and graduated from the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro in 1957, kicking off a 36-year teaching career at St. Michael’s School in River Ryan. In 1961 she married the love of her life, Lionel, raising four sons over the course of a long and happy partnership. Bernice enjoyed hiking with her husband, playing darts, line dancing and was an accomplished amateur painter. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Lionel, as well as her sons, Bradley (Denise), Russell (Darlene), David (Jennifer) and Christopher (Atousa); her grandchildren, Dana, Taylor, Alexandra and Sara; her sisters, Joan (Gerald) Burke and Lorraine (David) Sheppard, and her sisters-in-law, Ida MacKinnon, Donna Hiscock and Gloria (David) McGaw. She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith, her parents, and her sisters, Shirley, Florence and Greta. Special thanks to her care team: Dr. Daniel Kagedan and Dr. Madelaine Plourde, the Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the nursing staff on the 2nd floor of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, the Victorian Order of Nurses, Charlene and Judy for their excellent home care services and her niece, Shelley McLellan, for her constant care and attention. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, New Waterford. Due to COVID-19 regulations, a memorial service for immediate family only will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Combined Christmas Giving, PO Box 7, New Waterford, NS B1H 4E9 would be appreciated.
