Obituary of Charles Norman "Butch" Simm, Glace Bay

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of husband, father, grandfather and brother, Charles Simm, known as Butch. Butch passed away suddenly on Friday, August 20th, 2021 in Grand River. He was 78. He was born in Glace Bay to the late William and Eva (Caines) Simm. He was married to Sandra (MacDonald) and has two children; a son, Charles (Natalie) and a daughter, Wanda (Brian). He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Adam and Olivia Simm as well as his brother, Fraser (Linda) Simm, sister, Delores Garland and brother-in-law, Michael Conrad (Marion). Butch also has many nieces and nephews who will mourn his death. Butch was predeceased by his parents, a brother, William (Billy) Simm, sister, Phyllis Browner, brother-in-law, Jimmy Garland, sister-in-law, Shelia Conrad and step-mother, Gladys Simm. Butch enjoyed spending his time at his bungalow in Grand River. He was a hunter and a fisherman. As he retired, he took on woodworking as a hobby and was known to have every tool (sometimes multiples) of every kind. Butch volunteered his time by coaching in Glace Bay Minor Hockey, as well as Glace Bay Little League even serving as their President. He spent many summers travelling with Henry Boutilier and the Colonels. Butch also served as trainer for the Glace Bay Junior Miners in the 70s/80s. We would like to thank the Grand River Fire Department for their assistance and a special thank you to Sandy and Judy Morrison. We would like to acknowledge Dr. Doyle who showed great care and concern for Butch. Cremation has taken place. The funeral service, presided by Fr. Norman MacPhee will be held on Tuesday, August 24th at 2 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Interment in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Grand River Volunteer Fire Department or the Cancer Patient Care Fund.
