For some the first time you were called "babe" was by your first boyfriend or girlfriend. Not this girl. I had a Cape Breton grandmother, "babe" had an entirely different meaning. It was a term of endearment she branded her precious grandbabies & great grandbabies with from the moment you were born. When she hugged me at my graduation I was her "babe", when she kissed me on the cheek on my wedding day I was her "babe" and even when I brought my own babies home to meet her I was still her "babe". What a gift she gave me, to be a grown woman with children of my own and the responsibilities of being an adult but to still get to be her baby. I have often been told I'm a lot like my grandmother but it's when I hear the stories of how much she used to love her Granny and spending time with her that I know how much we were alike. Trips from the mainland to Cape Breton will be done with a little less purpose now and a little less anticipation, because she’s not there waiting to say "Is that you babe?".
