It is with great love and sadness that we, her children, announce the passing of Rita Poirier on January 20, 2022 at her home in Bedford, NS with her family by her side. Born October 29, 1946 in New Waterford, Rita was the daughter of the late Albert and Bernadette (Chaisson) Heffernan. Rita is survived by her children, Paul (Brie) Poirier, Mark (Michelle) Poirier, Leah (Brent) Castel, and her six grandchildren, Mason, Mitchell, Toby, Alaina, Jane, and Vance. She is also survived by her sisters, Netty (Sonny Corbett) Stapleton, Helen (Johnny) Murray, and Shannon (Ronald) MacCormick; brothers/sisters-in-law are Fred (Ruth) Poirier, Louise (Herald) Dawe, Dave (Anita) Poirier, Eileen (Harold) Montgomery, Hector (Rhodena) Poirier, and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents Albert and Bernadette Heffernan, she is predeceased by her husband, Walter (Wally) Poirier; father/mother in-law, Joseph and Mary (McNeil) Poirier; brothers-in-law, Harold Montgomery, and John Murray; sister-in-law, Linda Poirier; nieces, Christine Poirier, and Helen MacCormick. Mom was a loving and devoted soulmate to our father, Wally; we can still picture them dancing in the kitchen. She was a military wife and enjoyed the adventures of living in many different places around North America, California being one of her favorites. She created lifelong friendships wherever she lived. Other than her husband and children, Mom’s greatest passions included cooking for family and friends, conversations with loved ones, the latest fashion trends, and her beautiful grandchildren. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass of celebration will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard with Father Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery , Victoria Mines. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Waterford following the mass. Limited seating in the church. Masks are mandatory. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford.
