Obituary of Marie M. MacLellan, New Waterford

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Marie M. MacLellan, on June 14, 2022 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Marie was born in New Waterford, the daughter of the late Albert and Georgette (Carpentier) Desveaux. She was also predeceased by her son, Adrian and infant daughter, Johna Marie. She attended Mount Carmel School and trained as a hair stylist, an occupation she enjoyed for many years. She was a member of the former Mount Carmel and Saint Agnes parishes, and currently the Parish of St. Leonard. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, John (Mac); her daughter, Stacey and her children Rikki and Ella MacMullin of Ottawa; and her son, Matthew of Vancouver. Also mourning her loss are her sisters, Rose (John) Hutchinson of New Waterford and Bertha (Kevin) Williamson of Gillis’ Lake; her brothers, George (Anne Marie) of Coxheath, Arthur (Josie), Phillip (the late Dawn) and Frank (Nancy), all of Ontario. She is also survived by her in-laws, Babes (Willie) Buchanan, Agnes, Roddie and JJ MacLellan, all of New Waterford, and many nieces, nephews and great friends, whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by brothers, Roland (Dorothy) Deveau, Leo (Laura Cecilia Reid) Desveaux and sister-in-law, Hughena MacLellan. Marie was a well known and well respected dart player for many years. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Women’s Provincial Championship team in 1981, the Nova Scotia Mixed Doubles Championship team with Mac in 1984, and represented Nova Scotia in the National Championships in both 1981 and 1984. She loved the outdoors, especially gardening and walks by the ocean, and loved hearing about the exploits of her beloved grandchildren. The family would like to thank all who helped Marie during her illness over the last two years, especially the doctors and nurses of Palliative Care and the Cancer Center. A special thank you to her long time family doctor, Dr. Ian Oei. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 17 from 6-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A Funeral Mass of celebration will take place on Saturday, June 18 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Father Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Army, Navy, Airforce (upstairs), New Waterford. In lieu of flowers, donations to Palliative Care would be greatly appreciated.
