My earliest memory of my father was in Brasil, where we lived both on a house in front of the beach and on a small farm an hour inland. I think I was probably only 4 or 5 years old then.
He was often away travelling for work, and when he was in town he came home late most week nights.
All the free time he had, it seemed he would would spend with my sister and I. I felt in those moments, I was the most important person in the world and I am sure a lot of you felt the same way, when spending one on one time with him.
He was very creative and spent a lot of energy to make sure our time with him was very special. I remember as if it were yesterday, asking me to jump on his back and grab around his neck so he could swim with me past the waves at the beach in front of our house. He would then set me loose and teach me how to swim. He would say things like, “I am a dolphin and im going to give you quick ride”.
On the drive to the farm, every time it would be just him and I in the car, he would take a back road, a dirt road, so he could put me on his lap and let me steer the car while he drove. When it rained he would make sure to hit the big puddles so the mud would fly up and cover the entire car to get a good laugh out of it. Of course he would then proudly wash it as soon as the rain stopped.
Later on, while at the farm, he would involve me in everything he did. I remember the day when we went to a coffee farm and we were looking at the trees and he turns to me and says, “Coffee is not as fun, lets plant oranges instead, what do you think?”. He made you feel like you were part of the decision, even if the decision was already made. He then planted 50 orange trees and 50 lime trees. When possible he would drag me along so that it looked like I was actually helping, it sure felt that I was at the time, and it was very empowering.
These and many other stories, too many to share here, made him a hero to me, and I was convinced he was the strongest smartest person in the world.
As a teenager, my father further confirmed to me how brilliant he was, not only through his achievements in his career, which were many, but also through his ability to research thoroughly anything and execute it flawlessly through his impeccable work ethic.
As I became an adult, and also a father, going through a similar career path as my father, I had leaned very heavily on him for advice. On anything, and everything. Career decisions, purchasing houses, vehicles, relocations, the list goes on. He was the wise man i felt I had to consult to make sure all decisions I made were well thought through.
In recent years, I learnt something much more meaning-full to me about my father, something that I will forever remember to be his greatest quality to me. More than a hero, a brilliant hard working role model, a great wiseman, he was compassionate.
These past few years were the most difficult for me. My father was my greatest cheerleader, always had encouraging, positive things to say and it was clear to me that all he cared about was that I was happy, and when I was happy you could see in his eyes that he was happy too.
I was blessed to have had one of these happy moments as recent as the day before he passed away and I thank God very much to have given me that gift.
I share this with you because, like you, I am going to miss my father very much. I am sure each of you have your own stories that will forever remind you of him and you certainly will have your own way to cope with his absence but the way I will cope with it, will be to work very hard to become as good of a father to my kids as he was to me.
Sincerely,
David Poirier

I was very sorry to hear the news about Dave Poirier and I'm sending my sincere condolences to his wife, adult children, grandchildren, and extended family.
I also attended Xavier College in Sydney with Dave. While my father enjoyed talking with all of the students he stopped for along the New Waterford/ New Victoria highway, he was always pleased when there was one more seat in the car for Dave Poirier.
Dave was smart, personable and ever so interesting even in those novice university years!
Sincerely, Claire ( Timmons) Mills
