Obituary of Dave Poirier, New Glasgow, New Victoria

John David "Dave" Poirier (1950-2022), of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 surrounded by his friends.

Leaving to mourn are his wife, Anita (nee English), son David (Isabela); daughter Nicole (Greg Lays); and son Sam, siblings, Fred (Ruth), Louise (Harold), Eileen (Harry, deceased), and Hector (Rodena), grandchildren, Lucas, Liam, Joseph, and David Poirier and Nathaniel Lays.

Also surviving are David and Nicole’s mother, Helena, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brother Wally (Rita, deceased), sister Linda, daughter-in-law Denise, and parents Joseph Azade and Mary (MacNeil) Poirier, New Victoria, Cape Breton.

Dave was a graduate of St Francis Xavier University (BSc, ’71) and spent more than 40 years living and working in the oil field industry, first in Brazil and then on to parts of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He loved travel and new challenges, and never missed a chance to learn something new about the people, the culture, and the country he lived in. He shared this enthusiasm with his three children, of whom he was endlessly proud and supportive.

In his retirement back in Nova Scotia, he embraced farming and became something of an expert in growing asparagus, blueberries and grapes. Every July, he and his family hosted the annual pig roast on their farm in Pictou County, and blueberries were always on the menu.  Dave was wise and kind, had a curious mind, and was a citizen of the world. Our hearts are broken.

Funeral arrangements have been placed in the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 25th at 2:00 pm in the Parish of St Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford with Fr Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in St Alphonse Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Army, Navy Hall, New Waterford.

Family flowers only are requested.
