Obituary of Daniel 'Dapper' Petrie, New Victoria
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Daniel (Dapper) Petrie, 97, of New Victoria, on September 28, 2022. Born in Lingan on April 22, 1925, he was the son of the late Walter and Ann (Riley) Petrie.
Daniel was a devoted member of the Parish of St. Leonard. He worked in the cannery in Lingan in his earlier years and the Number 12 Colliery in New Waterford. His affinity for mechanics led to his longstanding career as supervisor at the Devco Machine Shop in Glace Bay, retiring in 1988. He loved machinery and tractors and devoted his life to refurbishing his 1955 Caterpillar tractor, 5-ton Truck and Sawmill. He was quick-witted and enjoyed making people laugh with a twinkle in his eye. He made friends easily and had a remarkable memory for names and faces of all the people he met. He will be missed terribly by his family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Brian (Mary), New Victoria, Glen, Ontario, daughter-in-law, Mary, Scotchtown, Dawne Marie (Kenny) McCarthy, St. Louis, Roselyn (Michael) MacLean, Halifax, Blair (Sydney) and Robert Durando, who was like a son to Daniel, New Victoria and sister, Mary (McKenzie) of New Waterford. He has 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marie (Briand); daughter, Darlene, in infancy; son, Gary, grandson, Gary and great-grandson, Jacob; brothers, Douglas, Lionel, Walter, and Joe.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith, New Waterford on Friday, October 28, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 10 a.m. in The Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue, with Father Godwin Obike officiating. Internment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens with a reception to follow at the K.O.C., New Waterford.
