In the summer of 1987, when I was 21 years old, we drove to Cape Breton from the states. It was only my 2nd visit to Cape Breton, and I had been learning the Cape Breton fiddle style only about a year or two. Our car broke down when we arrived in Sydney, and I called Dougie because he had befriended me on my very first visit the year before, when I met him at the St Joseph du Moine concert. By coincidence, Dougie had taken off a week from his work at the Beaton music archive, and he and Margaret invited us to stay with them while our car was in the shop. I'm not sure how many days it took the car to be fixed, but we stayed with them the whole week, playing music, listening to music, eating and drinking this beautiful music. That week Dougie and I became lifelong friends, and he continued to be my mentor, friend, and musical soulmate my entire adult life. I know that every note I play until it is my own time to go will be infused with his memory, guidance, stories, and love. May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.

Our sincere condolences to Dougie’s family. Doug was a true gentleman, a giant in the knowledge and performance of traditional Scottish music, and a man of deep faith. He was a good friend of our family through our father. Dad respected him both as a musician and a person, as did we. They had lots of laughs and stories that accumulated over the years at the many concerts and dances where they entertained together! May God bless him with a good spot on the other side…. Condolences from Donegal, Ireland to the family and friends of Dougie. I first met the man himself back in 1992 when I made my first of many trips to Cape Breton to study the music. Dougie was so kind and generous to me over the years - keeping me right in my research and sharing tunes many times. He was a big fan of Irish fiddler Sean Maguire. I remember ringing him from Donegal when Sean had died and he talked about him for hours … with loads of those Dougie chuckles in between! He was a legend and a gentleman and is a big loss to Cape Breton and all of us who were so lucky to have met him. My thoughts are across the pond with you all at this sad time. Liz Doherty

Bernie and I were saddened to hear of Dougie's death and wish to extend our sincere sympathy to his family. I first heard Dougie and Margaret play when I was a teenager and my Dad, John Burke and I were invited to come to their home to hear a couple of fiddlers play some tunes. Both Dougie and his Mom were fine accompanists and Dougie could play out the challenging fiddle tunes on the piano with such expertise that I was in awe. As years went on, I heard him playing in Boston and Toronto and he always impressed me with his fine ability to express the Celtic tunes so well on the piano. This kind, gentle, pleasant man was a gift to the Cape Breton music scene and hopefully his legacy will live on in many others who he influenced. What a great welcome he will have in Heaven from his mother, Margaret, and all the fine musicians who will greet him! May he Rest In Peace.

I can certainly echo my brother Dave’s tribute to Dougie with his posting today - a lovely man that our Mom and Dad thought the world of. I too have fond memories of his visits to the house on Ashland - even though I was the youngest he left an indelible impression with his infectious laugh and kindness. In 2019 my own family took a trip to NS and made a point of dropping by his house on Sharpe’s Lane. He didn’t recognize me as a grown man but when I introduced myself he uttered “oh for God’s sake” and immediately invited me in. Our visit was brief but he couldn’t help but play me a quick tune on the piano. Rest in peace Dougie.

So sorry to hear of Dougie's passing. Our deepest condolences to his Family members. What a fine, sweet man. Dougie boarded for a time at our small house in Toronto on Ashland Ave (Peter and Belle MacEachern) when I was about 10 years of age and he in his mid 20's then (in the early 1960's). I recall many evenings of chatter, music and laughter with Dougie and various family members dropping by. He and Aunt Bernice would have fits of laughter and it is a great memory, looking at old B&W photos from the time. He used to rave about my Mum's homemade Tea Biscuits.
At parties my siblings were exposed to some great fiddling but it was Dougie's piano playing "drivin'er" that amazed us. To this day I always say he instilled my great taste in Celtic Music (check out my basement of CDS and records, ha ha) In the early 70's I attended my first Mariposa Festival and was surprised when who was there accompanying John Allan, but Dougie. A great memory. My Dad and Dougie shared the same birthday, June 27th and always mailed each other a card.
Will be playing his music over the holidays, shine on Dougie, RIP

My sincere condolences to all of Dougie's family members -- he is a great loss as a musician, and as a gentleman and friend. I first met Dougie not long after I came to Cape Breton in 1993 as President of UCCB. We often met in the hallways or, more often, in the Beaton Institute and, early on, I was to discover his kindness and his wide knowledge of all things musical and Cape Breton. We had many interesting and informative conversations as he became one of my important tutors about the culture. I was fortunate that the friendship continued after both of us moved on through life, catching up at various musical events, and through a mutual friend in Fr. Georgie MacInnis. Our last conversations were on the phone a few times in these last several months, when we shared memories, including some of his beloved mother, Margaret. I'm not sure what I contributed to his life, but I know he contributed greatly to mine in our shared respect for one another. He has contributed so much to all of us in Cape Breton, using his many talents as a musician and, fundamentally, by how he lived his life as a decent, kind and caring man. Rest in peace, Dougie, and keep playing in the heavenly choir.

My first memories of Dougie took place at my grandparents house
In NewAberdeen (Philip & Sarah MacIntyre) Dougie once told me what a big deal it was for him and Winnie Chafe to play there during my parents (Alex & Chris Steele)
wedding reception. It was 1950 and they were both young teenagers
When Dougie and his mother would visit, Margaret would play first . When she was ready for a break or it was time for lunch,Dougie would get his turn.
The house is now gone, but the old
piano lives on at my sisters(Sandra)
place in Ontario. Dougie was happy to hear it is played regularly and still sounds wonderful

To Doug's family members; Sorry to hear of Dougie's passing. My brother,John Allan, met Dougir before I did.In the early 1960's when he was in the seminary in Ottawa,he wrote Mom telling her of the great piano player he had met :that was of course,Doug.Ten years or so later, the two played together on John Allan's second recording. In Cape Breton Celtic music,Dougie accompanied fiddlers who were born in the nineteenth century right down to the present. We can probably say that he enhanced the sound of fiddlers born over four generations. So long to a fine gentleman . Dougie was not just talented but always kind and ready to share a laugh. His devotion to our mother, the Virgin Mary as well as his mama, Margaret was so apparent. I loved our visits both in Port Hood as well as New Waterford. He would always treat us with a tune on the piano... our very own private concert with front seats. Even this last October on our last visit together, I was amazed how his fingers lightly danced across the piano keys. As proud of Dougie, as his whole family was, he never made me feel as musically untalented as I knew I was/am.
So have fun Dougie as you join the choir of angels with your mom and grandpa. I am sure you are all adding a Scottish twist to the choir.
As we would always say at the end of our visits, “See you later.” Rest In Peace my cousin.

Q: How did you meet Douglas?
A: I was a teen at the College of Cape a Breton. Me and some friends were playing in or near the Chapel where the piano was , if I remember. Doug came into the room. We had Lots of conversation about music, the chords I was playing with whatever we were playing then. I had not been involved much in Celtic tunes at that time and had no idea I was chatting with Cape Bretons finest Celtic piano player until years later when we re-met. We always talked about that first time we met at the collage any time I saw Doug. Always a great memory for me. Great man!
