Obituary of Isabel Darling, R.N., New Waterford

It is with great sadness that we announce Mothers’ peaceful passing on January 15, 2023.

She was born in New Waterford, NS, March 17, 1931 to the late Angus Hector and Kathleen (MacKinnon) Beaton.

She graduated from St. Agnes High School, New Waterford, NS and obtained her R.N.’s from Hamilton Memorial School of Nursing, North Sydney, NS, in 1952. She dedicated 39 years of her life to her profession, which she loved. First at The New Waterford General Hospital and then on to The New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.

Surviving are her children, Greg (Ardith), Jimmy, Angus (Michele), Russell, Kelly (Ricky), Tracy (Paul), Johnny (Julia), Steve”Ned” (Donna), and David; daughters-in-law, Darlene and Tarryn;  loving grandmother to 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her siblings, Greg Beaton, Florence McNeil, Dawn Proudfoot, Angus Beaton, Agnes Campbell, Sandra Murrant, Raymond Beaton and Lynn Beaton.

Besides her husband, John and parents, she was also predeceased by daughter, Anne; son, Leonard; brother, Eugene Beaton; brothers-in-law, Nelson Murrant, Roy McNeil and sisters-in law, Theresa Beaton and Cecilia Beaton.

She loved to travel to Mabou Coal Mines and visit her siblings for a “dileag” (jillick-wee drink). She most enjoyed time at her kitchen table with her children and looked forward to Friday evenings.

Isabel was a woman of strong faith.  She was the most selfless, considerate, thoughtful, easy-going, hard-working person you could meet and will be missed by all who knew her.

We would like to send special thanks to her caregivers; her children, namely Russell, Shirley Hogan and Sheila Leadbeater.  Also, greatly appreciated were her Palliative Care Team, Dr. Ritter, Dr. Burns, Dr. Poulos and R.N., Leah Burns. Thanks to the VON and the New Waterford Pharmasave Pharmacy staff. All of you allowed us to fulfill her wishes to stay at home.

Ma, you are gone, but thank-you for all these soft, sweet things you have left behind, in my home, in my head and in my heart!

Donations IMO of Isabel may be made to the Palliative Care Society or the VON.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Funeral Mass will be Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 10 am in the Parish Church of St, Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan, with a luncheon to follow at the KOC in New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
