Obituary of Joseph Patrick O'Connell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad Joe O’Connell, 84, of Glace Bay on Friday, December 16, 2016 at the V.G. Hospital, Halifax surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, on September 13, 1932, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret (Walsh) O’Connell. Joe was employed by Devco and worked as an underground coal miner. He was a charming and witty man; he loved to walk, dance, skate and spend time with his children. Joe had a great sense of humour that was enjoyed by all. He is survived by his daughters, Linda( Charlie )Magliaro, Gail (Wally) Jackman, Diane (Darrell) McDonald, Joan(Freeman) Jenkins, Ann (Richard)Watkins; sons, Robert (Sherry), Michael (Soonah), Korea, David(Linda),Gerry. Joe will also be sadly missed by his 11 grandsons, Brian, Scot, Steven, Daniel, Matthew, Jamie, Jonathan, David Jr. Tyler, Gavin and Jacob; two granddaughters, Kristin and Laura; four great grandchildren, Gianna, Summer, Benjamin, Adeline; sisters, Frances MacLean ,Sheila Cameron and his very special friend and companion, Dolly Miller. Besides his parents, Joe was also predeceased by his wife, Theresa; son, Albert; granddaughter, Katelin and 12 siblings. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 in V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 11 am in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Interment will be held a later date in St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Glace Bay Food Bank or to the Nova Scotia Lung Association. At this time, we the family would like to extend a special thank you to Cathy and Frank Bird for their kindness and hospitality and to Charlie Magliaro, for all his driving to Halifax.
