Obituary of Theresa Andrews, Glace Bay

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful mother, Theresa Bernadine (Madore) Andrews; age 93, on Monday, May 29, 2023, at Victoria Haven, Glace Bay, NS.  Born in Glace Bay on October 1, 1929, Theresa was the daughter of the late Bernard & Viola Madore.

A loving mother and homemaker, mom was a remarkable cook & baker and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She always had homemade molasses cookies, breads and pies in the cupboard.  Our mom greatly enjoyed heading to Vallie’s, with Mary, for their weekly hair appointments with Catherine which involved many laughs and always headed for lunch after their new hair-do.  She also loved to sew and knit when she took a break from the kitchen. Mom always looked forward to her visits from the Leadbeater’s, Theresa, Mary, Jimmy & Donna.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed bowling, skating, playing darts, especially having a game of cribbage with the Leadbeater’s (Len & Mildred), along with Brian and Everett Cann. Mom loved to take care of everyone, and always found ways to do that even in her later years when she would request a stop at Union Street Deli for sweets so she was prepared for visitors to offer tea when they came through the door.

Fondly remembered as “Big Nana” by all of her great-grandchildren.  They all will surely miss her gentle hugs & kisses, fist pumps and getting their favorite cookies from the buffet cupboard.

Theresa is survived by her son, Barry Andrews; loving daughter, Juanita Taylor (Bobby Gillis); daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Andrews; and sister-in-law Mary Carroll.  Also survived by her 8 grandchildren, Sheri Lee, Melissa (Boo MacDonald), Allison (AJ Traboulsee), Chris, Melanie, Megan, Alicia (Brian LeBlanc) & Garrett (Elyse Gregor); 15 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Austin, Brittany, Samantha, Leo, Nathan, Sara, Bryden, Connor, Dawson, Paige, Greyson, Daxson, Jaxson and Brody and 6 great-great grandchildren, Kaiya, Kalli, Mason, Maddox, Quinten & Hardin.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Thomas (Tommy) Andrews; son, Arnold Andrews; brothers, Louie & Jimmy Madore; and sisters, Edna Camilleri, Mary Krewenki, Viola Gilmet and her son in law, Kirk Taylor.

The family wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful homecare workers who cared for mom over the last few months.  A special thank you to Dr. David Ley, the staff at Victoria Haven, who made mom feel at home in a very short time, and special friend, Terri Andrews for her regular visits and treats.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 5th from 7 pm to 9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.  The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau is Tuesday, June 6th at 11 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery. All are invited to join the family at the Reserve Mines Pensioners Club for a reception.
