Obituary of Glen Matheson, Hammonds Plains and New Waterford
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alfred Glen Matheson, 56, of Hammonds Plains, on Dec. 14, 2023.
After graduating from Breton Education Centre in 1985, Glen went on to earn a Bachelor of Business degree from St. Francis Xavier University and wore his X ring proudly. Upon graduation from university, Glen moved to Toronto for a short time but quickly returned to Nova Scotia, working in the trade show industry, at the Halifax Forum, and more recently running his own business, Mr. Appliance.
Glen was known for his quick wit and his ability to make anyone laugh. He was a great cook. He and Kim fed and entertained many people in their home, always making guests feel welcome with Glen’s homemade bread. Glen was always on theme and dressed the part for dinner clubs, which led him to volunteer as a cast member in numerous plays with a local musical dinner theatre group.
Glen had many passions. He was a dedicated Boston sports fan, in particular his beloved Bruins. He loved music and travelling with his family to attend Zac Brown Band and Toad concerts, Bruins games, and golf trips with the guys. He was a proud Cape Bretoner and volunteered as a member of the Board of the Halifax Celtic Festival. Glen could make just about anything from scratch. Anyone who knew him, knew he was the first to lend a helping hand and could be depended on to share an interesting but useless bit of trivia in the process.
Glen was most passionate about his daughter Kendra. Later in his life he became a self-appointed art curator of Kendra’s (often Cape Breton-themed) artistic talent. He beamed with pride when he saw people’s reaction to receiving the piece they requested. Glen’s pride in Kendra was at the core of who he was.
In addition to Kendra (Ryan Young), Glen is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Kim (Kavanaugh), his father Alfred Matheson and sister Tanya (Willie) MacDonald and brother Bruce (Rosanna), his in-laws Mary and Jim Kavanaugh, and of course his beloved dog Xavier.
He is also survived by his nieces Davan and Lauren, and nephew Martin, aunts and uncles, cousins and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death recently by his mother Carmie (MacLeod) Matheson and his brother-in-law, Quinn Kavanaugh.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service for family and close friends will take place in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford on Wednesday, Dec. 20th at 2 pm followed by a reception, Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nova Scotia Mental Health Foundation or the charity of your choice. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
