Obituary of David Carter, Tower Road

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David William Carter, age 85 of Tower Road on Friday, February 16th, 2024 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Donkin, he was the son of the late Wilfred & Mary (Hunter) Carter.

David was employed in the mining & fishing industry. He was a member of the Donkin Fire Department. David had a great sense of humour and enjoyed his daily trips to Tim Horton’s on Reserve Street. He loved smelt fishing, going on long drives and coaching girls softball in the local area, he was also the president of the Glace Bay softball association.

David had a great passion for raising and training beagle dogs. He was a distinguished member and longtime president of Airway Beagle Club as well as being a member of the Cape Trial Beagle Club. His champion Beagle “Mookie” won many competitions in the USA and Canada.

David is survived by his longtime companion of 42 years, Margie Gilmet, son John Gilmet (Linda Lou), sister, Margaret Howie (Doug), 3 grandchildren, Matthew, Devon, Alyssa and seven great grandchildren.

Besides his parents, David was predeceased by three sisters, Isabel, Mary, Kathleen, three brothers, Jack, Lawrence and Gordon.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A graveside interment will be held at a later date in St. Gregory’s Cemetery, Donkin.
