Obituary of Florine Jane Larade, New Waterford

It is with great sadness that we the family of Florine Jane Larade announce her passing on Friday, May 31st, 2024 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 89 years.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, John C. and Frances McKenzie; siblings, Edward and Carson; sister-in-law, Elaine McKenzie and infant son, Paul.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Cindy (Robert), Howard (Sandra), Carol Lee (Rodney) and Darren, grandchildren, Angelina, Jillian, Jennifer, Lauren, Haleigh, Kyle, Kendall and Aiden and siblings, Dottie (Cyril), Bennett (Maybel) and Donnie (Shauna) and many other family and friends.

Upon completion of high school at Mount Carmel, she attended university at Mount St. Vincent where she obtained a degree in secretarial science. After leaving the Mount she was employed at the naval base in Point Edward and afterwards worked for the New Waterford School Board.

In 1970 she joined the staff of Breton Education Centre and worked there until her retirement in 1999. She loved the staff and students at the school and it is here that she met her dear friend Edna Aucoin. Mom and Edna stayed close friends and attended many union meetings and events to promote pay equity for female employees.

After retirement she continued her passion for yoga and volunteering at the Joy Program at Mount Carmel. Throughout her entire life she was a devoted Catholic and spiritual person. Countess times we called upon mom to pray for us when we needed help as we all believed her prayers were always somehow better than our own. She expressed an unconditional love for her family and was our greatest source of support and inspiration. She will be forever missed but never forgotten.

Many thanks to the staff of the palliative care ward who made her short stay a peaceful time. A special thank you to Dr. Bonnar and Dr. Bridget Lowry as your passion and kindness knows no bounds and to Maybel for always being there when she needed you. We love you mom (grandma). Enjoy your walks with your Westies.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5th at 10 am in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford with Fr. James Oliver officiating. Burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

The funeral arrangements are entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford where a reception will take place following the mass.
