Obituary of Annie Julia Smith, Glace Bay
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Annie Julia Smith at the Halifax Hospice. Annie was born in Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia, March 4, 1938. She was the daughter of Thomas and Angeline McDonald. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, grandmother and great grandmother, known affectionally as “Nan”.
She will be forever missed by her children, daughters Wilma Crowell (Bradley Crowell) and Rose McInnis (Trevor McInnis), Carol Lee MacKinnon; son Ed Smith (Judy Whitman); daughter-in-law Elizabeth Ransome Smith (Bill Smith) and; grandchildren Donald Crowell (Erin), Ryan Crowell (Abbey), Shelby McInnis (Jeffrey), Eric McInnis (Belinda), Jacob Whitmen, Jason Whitman, Corey Smith (Amanda), Courtney Smith, and Adam Smith; and great grandchildren, Kaeden, Iris, Michael, Brooklyn, Brianna, Jackson, Lincoln, and Harrison; sister Catherine (Dave) Parsons, and brother Edmund McDonald.
Annie was predeceased by her parents, Thomas McDonald and Angeline (Brunet); husband Edward (Sonny) Smith; son, William (Bill); sisters, Hannah (Richard) Young, Mary (Joe) Murphy, Antoinette Lannon, Julia (Roy) Anderson, Rose (George) Roberts, Rosella (Edmund) Murphy, Angeline (Chip) MacDonald, Germaine (Lawrence); brothers, Thomas (Mary) McDonald, Raymond (Theresa) McDonald, and Anthony MacDonald. Also predeceased by son-in-law Kevin MacKinnon and a close cherished friend and companion, Harry Mitchell.
Annie worked in many positions throughout her long work life for companies such as the Glace Bay Fish Plant, Sydney Airport and University College of Cape Breton. She had many talents, but counted cooking and gardening among her favorites. To all who knew Annie she lived life to the fullest; she shared her talents in the kitchen and was a long time neighbour and friend to all on Melrose Avenue. For many years, she provided meals to the sick, ailing, or shut-ins in Glace Bay. She always had a warm greeting to share on every street corner and to her long group of “friends” in her Facebook community. She had a special place in her heart for Troy, Angela, Ben and Blake, who provided great friendship and support over the years. In recent years, she became an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables and loved to wile the day away working in her garden. She treasured passing the time doing all of these things, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. Of late, she spent more and more time traveling to her three children’s homes. She especially loved talking and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Annie will be missed by all who knew her.
Thanks to the physicians of Lunenburg Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital, Dr. Walsh and his team of surgeons, the Palliative Care team at the VGH (Dr. Mercer, Megan and Shannon), and the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
Special thanks must be given to the Halifax Hospice who provided the utmost care and compassion to Annie in her last days and support to the family. They made a significant impact on Annie and her family. They will never be forgotten.
